We were given a Dell Netbook with Windows 7 Starter but were not given the passwords to get into the PC. Does anyone know of a utility that will allow me to RESET the admin password? We don’t need to know the old password used we just need to be able to reset it. And the utility must run from USB because the Netbook doesn’t have an optical drive.

5 Spice ups

hirens boot cd or erd commander or one of the many linux live cd’s with a password reset program on them

And it’s free.

+1 for Hiren’s Boot CD. I believe the newest version is 12.0

I have used it many times and always gets the job done!

Thanks. The Hiren’s solution worked. I connected an external optical drive and ran the boot CD. It worked like a champ! I will keep this is my IT Software Toolkit.

Hirens is on to version 13 now just for info

We had a similar situation with a Windows 7 notebook. I used Windows Login Recovery and it worked quite well. The enterprise version was about $50. The app created a bootable CDROM or DVD and when I booted from the CD into DOS it reset the password to a blank value, rebooted and reset the pwd. Took about 5 minutes to download, dcreate the boot CD and restart the Windows 7 machine. Now we have a CD to use in this situation. It will work with a USB drive as well.

Offline Window Password & Recovery Editor. Bootable USB and CD images. Always worked for me.
