Dear ALL,

Dear All,

I am experiencing a problem with Windows local file sharing. I have completed all applicable troubleshooting steps, including verifying that both devices are on the same network and disabling the firewall. Both devices are running Windows 11 Pro with the 24H2 update.

Welcome to Spiceworks, but as @Jay-Updegrove already mentioned, we need more detail as to the exact issue you’re facing (screenshots of error messages are always welcomed) and what steps you’ve already tried to resolve.

What is your file server OS level, what all have you tried already, have you looked into OneDrive/SharePoint for file sharing?

To enable and configure file sharing on Windows 11 Pro, follow these steps:

:white_check_mark: 1. Set Up File Sharing Settings

a. Open Advanced Sharing Settings

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.

  2. Go to Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings.

  3. Turn on the following options:

    • Network discovery
    • File and printer sharing
    • Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections (if available)

:white_check_mark: 2. Share a Folder

a. Right-click and Share

  1. Right-click the folder you want to share > click Properties.
  2. Go to the Sharing tab.
  3. Click Share…
  4. In the new window, choose the user (e.g., Everyone) and click Add.
  5. Set Permission Level (Read / Read/Write).
  6. Click Share, then Done.

:white_check_mark: 3. (Optional) Set Advanced Permissions

  1. In the same Sharing tab, click Advanced Sharing.
  2. Check Share this folder.
  3. Click Permissions to customize access (e.g., Full Control).
  4. Click OK > Apply.

:white_check_mark: 4. Configure Folder Security (if needed)

To allow specific users:

  1. Right-click the folder > Properties > Security tab.
  2. Click Edit > Add, type Everyone or a specific user.
  3. Set permissions (Full control, Modify, Read).
  4. Click OK.

:white_check_mark: 5. Access Shared Folder from Another PC

  1. On another PC on the same network:

    • Open File Explorer.
    • Type \\[ComputerName] or \\[IP address] in the address bar.
    • Press Enter.

For example: \\DESKTOP-1234 or \\192.168.1.10

  1. The shared folder should appear. You may be prompted to enter credentials.

:hammer_and_wrench: Troubleshooting Tips

  • Ensure both PCs are on the same network.

  • Disable password-protected sharing under Advanced Sharing Settings if you want anonymous access.

  • Check Windows Defender Firewall allows File and Printer Sharing.

  • Use ipconfig in CMD to find IP address:

    ipconfig

Have tried all these .

It’s of no use posting AI content, if you’re stuck with something it’s best to just tell us what you tried.

Perhaps we can start with the error, since you’ve not provided one.

Is this a home setup, workgroup, no domain?

What is the DNS each device is using, please ensure it’s internal and NOT Google DNS.

If it helps, please post

ipconfig /all

From both devices.

Well, glad you were able to solve the issue!

Can you share with us what it was please?

no problem is not solved i will come back to you

You marked @Rod-IT’s first response as the answer, please uncheck that so the forum stops telling us this is solved.

Is this one of those, wrong answers only ?

Maybe it didn’t use the magic word, “Please?”

Seriously though, if you can ping by name across to them then you should at least be able to get an error message stating incorrect login or something. So please try to ping the computer by name.

otherwise you can attempt to access via IP address \ \ 1.2.3.4<sharename> that kind of thing.

Is this a typo? Host name is ABSPC3050 but your error message has a space in it.

How are we supposed to help you when you’re not telling us what isn’t solved, or what you did.

Disabling the firewall may not help you either.

Make sure, in network and sharing centre, advanced sharing settings , both devices have file and printer sharing enabled.

Since this looks like a basic home setup, DNS may not work.

what happens when you use \192.168.1.12 from 192.168.1.18

And what happens if you attempt to browse to \\192.168.1.12 instead?
