I am experiencing a problem with Windows local file sharing. I have completed all applicable troubleshooting steps, including verifying that both devices are on the same network and disabling the firewall. Both devices are running Windows 11 Pro with the 24H2 update.

{"@type":"Person
[{"@type":"Answer

no problem is not solved

How are we supposed to help you when you’re not telling us what isn’t solved, or what you did.

Disabling the firewall may not help you either.

Make sure, in network and sharing centre, advanced sharing settings , both devices have file and printer sharing enabled.

Since this looks like a basic home setup, DNS may not work.

The error indicates a permission issue, either the share is not available or your account does not have permissions.

Do both devices have the same username and password, if not, you can enable guest sharing

then try \\ip-or-hostname\\share

You need to specify the share name or try mapping a drive.

Make sure “network discovery” is enabled too.

{"@type":"Person
Rod-IT
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Rod-IT"}},{"@type":"Answer

You’re trying to hit the base of the computer, \\IP_PC1 but that’s not what is shared (I hope…). Try looking at the shared folder, to see what the share-name is, or if in doubt, \\IP_PC1\\c$

{"@type":"Person
Jay-Updegrove
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Jay-Updegrove"}},{"@type":"Answer

No passwords are generally not a good idea.

Can you map a drive (a password will be required).

your issue may be that you do not have a password, in a workgroup setup, both devices should use the same username and password for seamless sharing, you can enable guest access if you like, given you have no password, it’s hardly secure anyway.

{"@type":"Person
Rod-IT
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Rod-IT"}},{"@type":"Answer

In Windows 11 24H2:

Guest access and passwordless sharing are disabled by default*, even on Pro editions

What OS are the machines (they need to be at least Win 10/11 Professional, not home edition) ?? Are they in a Domain ?

Then when you share a folder (eg from machine 192.168.1.12), can you try setting the “share permissions” to everyone with full rights (not recommended but only this time for testing).

{"@type":"Person
adrian_ych
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/adrian_ych"}},{"@type":"Answer

To fix the Windows file sharing issue, first go to Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center → Advanced sharing settings. Turn on Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing, and turn off Password Protected Sharing temporarily.

Then, open services.msc and ensure that the following services are running and set to Automatic (Delayed Start): Function Discovery Provider Host, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host. Instead of using the computer name, try accessing the shared folder directly using its IP address in File Explorer, like \\192.168.x.x\\SharedFolder.

Also, open optionalfeatures.exe and enable SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support and SMB Direct. On the shared folder, right-click → Properties → Sharing → Advanced Sharing, and make sure it’s shared. Click Permissions and add “Everyone” with full control. Do the same under the Security tab.

You can also try mapping the network drive via “This PC” in File Explorer using the path \\IP\\SharedFolder. If the folder still doesn’t show up, try disabling IPv6 in your network adapter settings. If none of this works, test connectivity with a ping and check for any error messages.

{"@type":"Person
afroz-stellar
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/afroz-stellar"}}]}}
