I keep getting the following:

“There was a Windows authentication error when attempting to connect to this device.”

on all of my XP boxes when doing an inventory scan. They all show up in the unknown catagory.

I’ve been working on one box in particular just to try and gain access to it. I have a special account setup on all boxes - “IT”. “IT” is an admin account on all of the boxes.

On the one i am working on right now - i have gone through and turned on remote desktop connection and can connect that way. However, Spiceworks still cannot. Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks,

steve

Remote desktop connection is not sufficeint for WMI to work correctly. Make sure your DCOM settings are correct as well.

BTW, is this a workgroup or a domain?

Hi Steve, Sorry for the inconvenience and delay. Please confirm if you are on our current 3.0 version.

This was a workgroup. I’m now setting it up as a domain and waiting until that is done to try Spiceworks again. After reading, I noticed that most problems seem to happen w/ Dell boxes. Most of ours are Dell.

It also appears that when you rename an item (to give it the correct machine name), it is tied to the ip and not on the MAC… Am i correct in this?
