I get a call what seems to be every day from HPE trying to connect with me from a live stream registration. There are reasons I’m not picking up the phone or want to talk to this person.

  • All calls are from a restricted number
  • The person waits until they hit my voicemail, THEN hang up. He’s left several voicemails of just hang ups. Grrr
  • His e-mail isn’t from a HP recognized domain. Seems to be a marketing system. Makes me feel like a “number”
  • E-mail signature doesn’t list his title. Just name, number, and extension. Sounds legit…
  • E-mails are very pushy, “CONTACT ME!”. Why not share some information up front? You obviously already have my contact information. Share some articles. “Please call me so that I can THEN share information”, no thanks.

I like HPE. I just ask that you work on your marketing program…

I feel like this is the the perfect opportunity to run your troll.exe command. everyone knows the low hanging fruit isn’t the best, I’d reach up above to a higher branch and give it a shake, see if you can’t get some clarification.

I wish I could say it was just HPE, but I have been getting this kind of treatment from a lot of vendors lately. Hence my block list is growing quickly.

While I totally agree with all of your points, and I am definitely guilty of doing the same thing, let’s not all forget that this is why Spiceworks is free and that it only takes a minute to reply to the email with a “thanks, but no thanks” (you can leave out the “I was only trying to win that xbox/giftcard/etc.” lol)

I’m not complaining about being contacted, at all. I’m so sorry if that’s how my post comes across. I’m aware that I’m going to get an e-mail or a phone call when I sign up for an event or contest. I’m only trying to help them market better to us.

Lots of scams come through with a restricted number such as “This is your captain speaking” or “You’re spending too much on your car insurance!”. Calling with a restricted number does not make me want to pick up my phone.

Waiting for my voicemail to complete before hanging up just irritates me. If you’re going to leave me a voicemail, say something. Don’t hang up and make me check my voicemails for nothing.

There’s nothing personal about this e-mail at all. It’s not informative either. Feels like an automated response that’s typed up for registrants that’s pushed out from their marketing system when they can’t get a hold of somebody. Make me feel valuable instead of just a contact you picked up. Veeam and Unitrends does it well by thanking you for attending and sending you additional resources. Webroot also sends you useful resources and I don’t recall ever getting a phone call from them. Did you see this sales rep at least thank for me for attending and for my interest? I don’t see it. My impression is “I got your contact info from the batch that signed up for an event so please call me so I can talk about HPE storage”.

Amen to the OP and follow-up post… let’s face it… we ALL KNOW we’ll be contacted… but it’s the way that you do it that makes a difference.

Like I always say to my kids… “It’s not WHAT YOU SAY… but HOW YOU SAY it.”
