Miguel Uribe Turbay[a] (born 28 January 1986) is a Colombian politician serving as a member of the Senate since 2022.[1] A conservative right-wing critic of incumbent president Gustavo Petro, he is a pre-candidate in the 2026 Colombian presidential election.[2][3]
Early years
[edit]
Miguel Uribe Turbay was born in Bogotá in 1986. His mother was Diana Turbay, a journalist kidnapped by the Medellín Cartel and killed during a botched rescue attempt in 1991. On his mother's side, he is also the grandson of Julio César Turbay Ayala, who served as President of Colombia from 1978 to 1982.[4][5]
Political career
[edit]
At the age of 26, Uribe was elected to the Bogotá City Council for the Colombian Liberal Party. In 2016, he was appointed secretary of government of Bogotá under Mayor Enrique Peñalosa. He ran for mayor of Bogotá in 2019 but lost to Claudia López of the Green Alliance.[5]
In the 2022 parliamentary election, he was elected to the Senate for the Democratic Centre (CD).[5]
Shooting
[edit]On 7 June 2025, Uribe Turbay was shot from behind during a rally at El Golfito Park, Modelia, Bogotá. After Uribe Turbay was shot, a gunfight occurred between his bodyguards and the gunman; at least one other person is believed to have been injured during the attack. Uribe Turbay was transported to Engativá Medical Center in west Bogotá.[2][3] The BBC reported that he was "shot three times – reportedly twice in the head".[6] One suspect, described as a 15-year-old minor, was detained.[5][7]
The same day of the attack, Minister of National Defense Pedro Arnulfo Sánchez posted on X a reward of 3 billion pesos (approximately USD 729,000) for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.[8][7]
