I have been a fairly long-time user of Backblaze for unlimited online backup, and became a reseller as well. So far, it has been reliable and works pretty flawlessly. It does not install on Server OS, and does not backup shares or mapped drives.

However, this week I found GotBackup.com which is launching Monday, I think, and offers resellers 100% commissions. (I think it is only on the 1st month, and 50% commission after that each month).

They claim Unlimited backup storage like Backblaze does. (So far I have backed up 42GB+ on it, and I just installed it on a Windows 2013 server and will attempt to backup 4TB of data with it. It also does not backup shares or mapped drives.

They claim to handle all the tech support, billing, and pay commissions monthly.

I am curious if anyone else has seen this, and if anyone has reviewed it?

I am still investigating, but it checks out, I think this could be the new backup solution I will offer home (and possibly business) users. So far, I am sufficiently impressed.

I have signed up as a reseller (there is a monthly licensing fee, but no contracts or commitments), and would love to network with others, and even build a team of like-minded IT professionals who want to resell it as well.

Also, does that fact that it pays commissions for direct sales, and also through a networking (MLM) structure make this product a turn-off for you?

3 Spice ups

Anything that even remotely resembles MLM type stuff and I walk away…

1 Spice up

I wouldn’t touch this one with a ten foot pole - or a hundred foot pole, for that matter. In fact, I wouldn’t touch it with a pole of any length. Partly because the MLM aspect totally stinks; partly because I’d never store my data with a company I knew absolutely nothing about. Where, exactly, do they keep your stuff? On a hokey home-brewed server in a recently converted warehouse with a leaky sprinkler system and no lock on the front door? Or…?

There’s absolutely no reason why anybody would choose to use this service - especially as it’s more expensive than offerings from well-known, reputable companies such as CrashPlan.

I wondered about how much that would turn people off. It doesn’t bother me personally, but I do not want any MLM-ish stuff getting sent to customers that don’t want to see it. That is the part I am concerned about. Thanks for replying!

MLM-ish stuff being sent to customers wouldn’t be my primary concern - that would be the ability of the this company to adequately protect data in the long term. As I said, where do they keep it? Do they have their own infrastructure or rent capacity from Amazon or…? What’s their financial position?

brettjeffries, that is a pretty long pole! I have looked into the company, and they have their own data center in San Antonio, and it has been there for years. I don’t especially like their off-shore support, but even Microsoft has moved a lot of their support off-shore. It seems we can’t really avoid that. The company behind it, though, GVO, has been around for more something like 20 years.

I am testing the service to see how well it performs. I have used Backblaze, which is also $5/mo. like CrashPlan. Backblaze has a cheaper Restore-to-door service, but otherwise looks similar.

Thanks again for your feedback. I am glad to hear all opinions while I am checking this out.

According to their website, they have multiple data centres - which, given the size of the company, seems extraordinarily unlikely. Everything about this outfit stinks. There’s absolutely no way I’d ever recommend a service like this; in fact, I’d strongly advise people not to use it.
