Hello all! I’m new to the MDM game and would like to know what solutions would work well with cell phones/tablets primarily, iOS and Android, but could also be used for other devices down the road like laptops etc. We currently have a Verizon Business account with about 50 lines and growing, and I know that they have their own solution but I’m not an expert in this field. I have researched numerous solutions out there, which has been overwhelming, but we just need a simple and low cost option that is straight forward and easy to use to be able to setup a new phone/device with it’s own iOS or Google account. Any recommendations on what to look for or avoid would be appreciated!

If you guys have Microsoft E3 licenses Intune is included in that.

As C-T mentioned - what software are you using for your productivity (M365, google, something else)? most of those solutions do have an MDM solution that can be included with the productivity software. That is a good integrated way of starting with MDM.

After that - Almost all solutions do the same things. So find a brand you feel like you can trust and spin up a trial and see how it works.

I have tried a few MDM solutions that I just did not like how it worked but overall they are quite similar.

We have just deployed intune from Microsoft as mentioned about - Works really well with both Android and iPhone

We were already using it with PC’s / Laptops and works really well

+1 another vote for Intune.

They all seem to have their strengths and weaknesses, try to demo if you can.

Ivanti (previously Mobile Iron)- For iOS devices has gotten the job done but struggled with Androids. Best if you can get it linked to a Managed Apple Buisness account and that linked with your phone provider.

Meraki - Better for Android devices in my experience. They managed the iOS device fine, it was just more difficult to provision them in.

Hey OP, baramundi’s Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) may be of interest to you. EMM comes with the hardware side of MDM, the software side of Mobile Application Management, and Mobile Content Management. Giving you one application to manage your mobile devices. The linked page has a lot of information but if you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

We have the one through VZW, Verizon MDM. It is pretty basic and I am not too impressed. The setup and implementation was great and everything was explained, but, as I said, pretty basic level.

We’re currently using Hexnode, and are beta-testing NinjaRMM’s MDM solution. Hexnode has been an ol’ reliable horse for a couple of years now, and is fairly easy to use for a relatively low cost.

Ninja MDM is basically the same - we use it for our Android devices for the kiosk mode, but both can be used for ipads, etc. as well.

@laurapotter How did your deployment go for Android and IOS. We are currently using Intune for our PCs and looking to do Android and IOS this year. Are you also doing MAM or just MDM with Android and IOS?

Using DUO here. Simple to setup.

It’s also included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium, so you’re a Microsoft 365 Business Standard customer, it’s just a bit more to do the upgrade. Plus, you’ll also get access to Microsoft 365 Business Defender (an EDR platform) and Azure AD P1 which is useful if you have an AD Hybrid environment.

Yah we have the same thing here, its basic alright, implimentation was not the greatest. To be honest I have not even logged into it in a while. I should check and see if they have updated it and made it any better.

Intune with Platform SSO is the way to go.

If its Apple Only I would say Apple Business Manager for low tasks and Jamf for real MDM stuff. Maybe Jamf Now if dont want to care about maintenance. Otherwise I would recommend looking into MicroMDM.

As a utility company, I understand you may be looking at saving the taxpayer money and working with a small budget. You may also be a target for state sponsored hackers looking to cause their enemy country unrest.
It is very common that companies are not utilizing all the services they are paying for. Do not try to branch out into too many vendors, products, if a solution you already use, provides MDM. As a utility company, I would be very carful about Supply Chain Security, by minimizing the amount of vendors you work with, (and their associated security risks)

  • Are you already paying for Microsoft InTune?
  • Do you have a Remote Monitoring and Management tool that also includes MDM.
  • Does your Antivirus provide MDM?
  • Some network equipment providers also provide MDM, (i.e. Cisco Meraki)
Note: Also consider MAM (Mobile application management), in addition to MDM. Going with a provider that only does MDM is already behind the curve.
  • MAM protects the data that flows in and out of the apps.
  • MDM protects only the device, but not necessarily the data.

Had a few hiccups with it with some older devices being a bit of a pain.

Now its up and running it reports well and actually is really useful with keeping to things like Cyber Essentials etc.

We have tested on Android and iOs and we have a few of each device enrolled, once we got over the needed apps and compliance (which are easy to add for users) we found it helpful and its not too bad for the end users, especially with Apple where there is no actual visable difference.

@jeffjanor6063

We currently only have Office 365 G3 GCC license which doesn’t give us access to Intune

If you’re starting to manage more iOS and Android devices, Scalefusion MDM is a great choice. It’s easy to use, so you can quickly set up new devices with their own accounts. Plus, it can handle other devices like laptops later on, making it a flexible solution for your growing business. It’s a good option for Verizon Business devices without breaking the bank or getting too complicated
