I would just like some input on how others train for Certs in general, more specifically Comptia’s Security +.

Professor Messner is pretty good for Sec+ , Honestly, that cert does not need a lot of training…

Security certs have very little practicum to do. basically you buy a book, read book, study, take test. It’s not like a technology cert.

I second Neally, pretty much those are the website I use for most of the training, as they have a bunch of information. As well you can have micro certifications in Cybrary.it, they are not full certifications but they are pretty good for resume purposes.

It’s also going to depend on how you learn best. Book, video, in person? If you know you can digest the information from a series of videos, Neally has a great suggestion. If you do well with a book, then one like this would be useful: Amazon.com , as it comes with sample questions, flash cards, etc.
If you learn well with other people, check out your Spicecorps or maybe there are some kind of groups local to you that might be interested in doing that. Worst case, you take an actual course somewhere.
It depends on what you want to invest and how you learn.

Welcome to the community! YOu also would do best by taking example tests of Security+ online and it will help you greatly. It’s like taking any other tests, you just need to prepare
Udemy.com. It’s super cheap, portable, and for something as simple as Security plus it’s all you’ll need.

Training:
Drink raw eggs. Lots of sit ups and pushups. Run around Philly yelling something about Adrienne.
Passed Sec+ couple of weeks ago. Used CBT nuggets, google and android app with practice questions (by Darril Gibson).
I used TestOut to help me get my Security+ cert. It definitely isn’t the cheapest option, but it has useful lab simulations. So if you don’t have experience with AD, group policy, or Linux the simulations can really help you get a feel for it. I studied most nights for about a month until I was making 90-100 on all practice tests/quizzes I could find.
Hey @micheal4607214 ,
Welcome to the SW community! Glad to see you are getting plenty of great advice from your fellow Spiceheads.
Another resource you can use is CompTIA’s CertMaster which is an intelligent online learning tool that helps you get ready for your CompTIA Security+ certification exam and offers a Free Trial
Also, a free resource that could be of some help is our Cybersecurity Hub with key trends, tips, and tools to help you succeed as an IT security pro http://www.mylanderpages.com/CompTIA/cybersecurityhub
Happy to answer any questions if you had them or put some more resources on your map! Best of luck on your studies.
Agree with Neally - Prof Messer is decent. Have a look at this book as well: Amazon.co.uk
Comes with a digital test environment and flash cards. Has helped me a lot
I realize it’s a catch-22 for some, but actual experience is the best prep for almost any cert.
I personally think security certs and security responsibilities at work should come after you have already demonstrated a strong understanding of infrastructure, from OS to VoIP and everything required to support that infrastructure. You can’t audit or secure a firewall or OS without understanding the underlying technology. Security requires a general understanding of many many technologies.

Have you taken CompTIA exams before?
Many answers are very, well comptia answers, rather than real world answers. that’s catch 23
