Hi All,

I’ve been in IT support for over 15 years and i’m interested in learning more about cyber security.

Where is the best place to start - Comptia Security plus or other good starting courses. Anyone expereince what best to look at after the above?

Are training providers the way to go or is most available online and through books now?

Thanks for the help.

Security+ is a great one for getting your feet wet. Once you have a good foundation you can start exploring (in greater detail) specific area that have an interest in. For me, it was wireless security.
There are a lot of good free resources out there too for Sec+
I’d look at:
Professor Messer

and Cybrary
https://app.cybrary.it/browse/course/comptia-security-plus

they also have a ton of other security content too

I always recommend this blog to anyone interested in pursuing a career in infosec. It’s by far the most comprehensive guide I’ve seen:

Hey OP! Perhaps our Breaking into Cybersecurity ebook might help: https://www.isc2.org/-/media/ISC2/Resource-Thumbnails/Resource-Center/eBooks/Breaking-into-Cybersecurity-eBook-FINAL.ashx?la=en&hash=30CEE2EA14E8C20CD7CB3C9C4CCCF734AF95A909

In terms of certifications, you may want to look into the SSCP certification - It demonstrates you have the advanced technical skills and knowledge to implement, monitor and administer IT infrastructure using security best practices, policies and procedures.

Hope that helps get you started! Feel free to PM me if you have any particular questions - Happy to help if I can.

Hi,

You may want to check out the Edx Cybersecurity MircoMasters online program from Rochester Institute of Technology you can pay per course and sometimes you can find discount codes. I have taken 4 out of the 5 courses and it has been informational. Also if you don’t care about getting a verified certificate you can audit the courses for free.

In addition to recommendations above, You can get great training from SANS.
