You need a partition recovery possibly depending on what has happened since it tanked.

We’ll start with the easy one first:

  • Turn the machine off ASAP
  • If you are using the machine now forget it, your overwriting everything
  • If you not using it, more than likely Windows is corrupted which is easy to to get around
  • Get a Live Linux distro and fire the/a machine up running from the Linux
  • Put a USB drive in a port and go search for your data

EDIT - If you did format it, you need the partition recovery, get out the checkbook!

I’m not sure I understand the problem - did you have a power failure and now you can’t access your files? Did you start a format process at any point? In any case, definitely do not continue using the drive as your data may be overwritten by further usage. I wouldn’t say “forget it” though. It’s difficult to say but chances are there are still files you can recover. For example, a format and fresh OS installation will overwrite the previous OS and file system, along with possibly some of the user data, but it will likely still have a lot of data in the “free space” that is recoverable by some file recovery tools.

It’s not a great situation, but you have some software options for data recovery. Give us a better idea of what happened and what you see and we can target our replies better. I hope we can help you out.
