I have a hard disk drive that I mistakenly wipe out. Now I want to recover all of my important files. Can someone please help with a good data recovery software I could use? A free one, but if you know of any with a reasonable price that will be great. Thanks

I usually use GetDataBack, I think it’s only around $80. If it was just reformatted it shouldn’t be hard.

TestDisk has always worked well. How exactly did you wipe it? Format? delete partitions?

The free and effective data recovery are testdisk and photorec. Don’t be deceived by the name photorec, it recovers all types of files. TestDisk Download - CGSecurity

Pete, even that very good program’s success chances will depend upon how the OP’s HD was wiped, correct? Details on exactly what was done and how it was done is needed. Even R-TT’s R-Studio Network success would depend upon what happened to HD?

You are right in that any writing activity reduces the chance of recovering data. Luckily, most people just format the HD and do not write to every memory location which takes hours.

How exactly you wiped out the data from that drive? Look, if it’s just formatted then you can recover your data using DIY data recovery software. If you have accidentally deleted the partition then also you can recover the data. First of all, you must stop using the drive anymore to increase the chances of recovery. For free I would suggest you try Recuva from Ccleaner which has free version too.

My go to is R-Studio. https://www.r-studio.com/

$50 and you simple make an image of the drive then recover the files out of it is the safest way. Do not write to the drive.

Have used it on drives, memory cards with great success, can even recover a failed array.

You may want to think about taking this drive to a specialist. It will cost money but it is the surest path to you getting your data back. As an admitted amateur in the area it is going to be a steep learning curve. Either way I hope you find success.

How was the drive formatted? What was the filesystem on there? How much data are you looking at restoring? What size is the drive? Is the drive’s health good?

If you’ve never recovered data before, I would leave it to the pros to handle as you are probably not in the right state of mind if it does go south while you’re performing a recovery.
