thats what I’m actually running, its a shame it’ll only do a gb for free but never mind

I’d use Dmitry Postrigan’s MHDD. It’s a powerful tool which is supposed to be run from liveCD environment. You can find it ie. on Ultimate Boot CD .

To recover files or partitions on drive where partitions are lost for some reason I’d use TestDisk/PhotoRec, which are present on Ultimate Boot CD as well.
