SPICE-E BACoN (UDTQ#104) - That’s not a Hive!

Happy Tuesday, folks!

The Recap:

Yesterday’s question topic featured many doggo and catto pictures, so if you missed it, go check it out! The question asked about the file that holds a tree of registry keys and the answer we were looking for is “a Hive” which around 75% of you correctly chose! For anyone unfamiliar with this (odd, if you don’t know the story behind it) term, go check out Raymond Chen’s Old New Thing blog post from August 8, 2003 here or his article from 2009 explaining why Microsoft never changed the now confusing terms for the registry here.

The Ramble:

On Thursday, I asked about what title I should give these posts going forward. A few folks pointed out that me changing the name made it more difficult to find your daily question. We had a poll to determine what the name would be going forward, and BACoN won, but I really liked @frankitup 's idea here so I’m going to post another poll below the question with a new option (and the best ranked options from the last poll.)

The Real Question:

I seem to have distracted everyone with doggos well enough that there weren’t any comments on having a “registry week” so we’re going to keep it rolling for now! :stuck_out_tongue:

Although it’s often presented as if it is a Hive, HKCU (HKEY_CURRENT_USER) is actually a subkey of which Hive?
  • HKLM (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE)
  • HKU (HKEY_USERS)
  • HKAU (HKEY_ALL_USERS)
  • HKRB (HKEY_REPOSITORY_OF_BACON)
  • I’m not sure, but I’m excited to learn more!

Bonus Poll, round 2!

Which title should I use for future DTQs?
  • BACoN
  • SPICE
  • SPICE-E BACoN

The Rest:

If you’d like to be notified when there’s a new question, check out this How To guide on following tags! I also typically post in the General chatroom when they go live, so come hang out there too!

As always, if you have suggestions for future questions, improvements, or want to help out with a full question, shoot me a DM or leave a comment below!

And since you’re still reading this, don’t forget to leave me a spice-up just below this! If it’s not orange and filled-in like this → :sw_pepper: it’s not spiced up yet! It lets me know you enjoy these and gives us both points, so why not?

It’s too big to be a space station…

The user-specific NTUSER.DAT file is a hive that is mounted under HKU but conveniently aliased to HKCU. Multiple NTUSER.DAT files can be mounted under HKU to reflect multiple concurrent logins on the system, but HKCU reflects the current user context. Each user on the system will see their own, personal HKCU.

SPICE-E BACoN, is that an ingredient on a Bacon Taco?

HKRB (HKEY_REPOSITORY_OF_BACON) sounds like it would be the registry hive replacement for .bni (Baconization) files.
