Does anyone else have the problem where they come in during normal business hours, even though you have a project that will keep you there well after closing. I’ve put in over 40 hours in 3 days. I must be an idiot, but what if something goes down during the day? Anyone got a solution to my dilemma?

take a day off?

Yeah i know, this suggestion sucks

Vacation planned for 10/13 unfortunately this project will take a majority of the time between now and then.

Just sleep at work. Duh.

i would do partial days, come in a few hours behind and you can always be on call. that would get a few extra hours of sleep…maybe…

I assume there is no one to cover for you. When out network / server guy has to do after hour work i cover for him. I’ll work a 6.30am to 5pm and he will come in at 3pm do his prep work and then start with the downtime at 5.30 or 6pm and work till whenever then come in late the next day.

If there is a network or server issue during the day I take care of it.

other than that not sure what to tell you.

They don’t charge me extra for working more.

It’s Tuesday about 4PM and if you count Sunday I’ve got 27 hours in this week.

I know there are plenty of people who are pushing 40 hours by now.

Makes you treasure the 8 hour day.

Lots of energy drinks or Mountain Dew?

yup, this line of work will never be a 40 hr/week job.

Two words: Boundaries, dude. I usually do an extra hour or two just to keep up with communication, etc. But…

You’re no good to anyone if you’re so wasted you can’t think. If you have a good boss, you’ll be told not to show up until later in the day.

Always leave for lunch, they will track you down in the lunchroom with problems. When planning your projects add another 30%-50% to the length of time to complete (when you finish sooner you look really good). And, live by the philosophy ‘There will always be something to finish or fix and it will be there tomorrow.’

if you are the only IT support person…you dont really have a choice. but if you have other support people there working with you, then they can handle the day stuff if you are going to be there late.

Plain and simple, you have to make a choice. Either start looking after you or get sick. You’re working yourself ragged and you will pay for it someplace.

The first thing I would do is talk with the boss, and explain the problem. See if they can either adjust your hours, or get you some PT help. If you have to work OT, than make sure you get your comp time.

Personally, what I would do is if your project requires you being there after hours, come in later. If something goes down, Then worry about it. Till it does, you’re jumping at something that hasn’t happened yet.

everything is a priority if you ask some people. come in late after 10hrs go home. unless there is something that is important. like everything down.
