As of right now, I have been working all weekend on and off. And since Friday afternoon at 3 PM I have racked up a whopping 41 hours and 13 minutes.
A total environment changeover, a software conversion to a full microsoft-house, 10 new users (on top of the current 384) starting tomorrow, and lots of other stuff I can’t even think of. All of this with no written plan, no testing ahead of time, only 8 people (2 of which were less than useless) and the knowledge that failure will most likely cost us our jobs. So the first users get here in less than three hours (which is also when I have to be here) and we still do not have about 40% of what we need done actually done.
And the man in charge of my department? He left in the middle of the day while we were slowly starting to drown in the overwhelming list of things to be done.
I need a couple hookers (pre-paid), a giant Christmas bonus and a two-week vacation. I would say I need sleep as well, but apparently I no longer require it because I have gotten a total of 9 hours of sleep since waking up Friday morning at 9AM.

I’d hope the hookers were to act as temp admins, considering it sounds like you’ve been worked like whores… However, complete change over, no plans, 48 hour op? sadly, sounds familiar.

oh that is absolutely happening. the first wave of users show up at 6 so I’m turning this into an all-nighter and working straight through. Around 9, all the small initial “issues” should be addressed and when the users start to settle in I am bouncing (that will make it a 26-hour shift) and as soon as I am home, both my work and personal phones are getting turned off and will remain that way at least until some time this afternoon when I deem it necessary to be awake.

Keep a list of what all you did. When you do take time off, turn your phone off. Make sure you get the break and rest you need. Burnout is very real and can change your perspective on your job and your life.
Why keep a list? For when it’s time for your review/raise or when the guy that left, is fire or leaves, you can prove you were the brains and brawn behind the operation, anyway.

This is my virtual high-five to you! Think about what you just accomplished! When I get screwed into impossible tasks like that, I try to think of it as playing on hard mode. When in doubt ask your self “What would Chuck Norris do?” he’s my source of motivation in times of hardship.

Eeesh. Sounds like fun! Hopefully all goes well.
When it is all over maybe you’ll get a “job well done”.
Oh, your guy left and went home? Maybe not.

As a side note, the name of this post is also a great song by the Barenaked Ladies.
