Unitrends running as a VM, accessing SQL2005 running as a VM. Agent installed successfully, but I cannot browse the SQL databases running on the machine, and when I try to initiate a database backup, I see this in Windows Event Logs:

(id 1184) System State agent failed to create system state backup file C:\PCBP\Metadata.dir\Backup\j_25.Unitrends.SystemState.bkf

A “regular” agent backup of the C:, D:, and F: drives runs and completes just fine, but I can’t get the SQL interface working at all.

John - Which version of UEB are you using?

Katie, it’s the free VM only Enterprise version, 7.2.something (I just downloaded it with in the past week or so).

John - I thought that might be the case. Our free edition is not application aware.

Are you using UEB in production, or as a proof of concept? If you’re using it as a proof of concept, I would encourage you to upgrade your license to our trial license, which gives you unlimited backup protection for 30 days for any client in your environment. If you’re using it as a production backup solution, then I would upgrade to the NFR edition, which allows for 2 application servers. Both of these options include support. All you have to do to get the NFR edition is register your version with the code “SpicyUEB”. To make these changes, simply email licensing@unitrends.com, and they will take care of the rest.

Thanks Katie. It’s kind of a combination of both – we’re doing some infrastructure upgrades next year so I’m evaluating backup options, and we’ve been having problems with our existing Backup Exec so I’ve been putting Unitrends through its paces in our production environment at the same time.

We never bought the SQL agent for BE and just do log and database backups to a file server. We’re getting that functionality now so that’s no big deal. The Exchange mailbox backups seem to be working with the free version, though I need to test a restore.

I appreciate the clarification.
