I just received a call, which I probably should have recorded since it was obviously a scam. I get this call from someone with a really thick Asian accent stating that they are trying to sell IT services and if I would be interested in more information. I look at the caller ID and it says “24-7 LOCKSMITH” with an Arizona area code. I ask her why the caller ID says 24-7 LOCKSMITH and the line goes dead.

I really wish I was better at messing with these people as it could be a lot of fun.

I also wonder if they have hijacked an extension on some legitimate businesses phone system.

I have had so much fun with similar calls stating that they were the IT people I called for help to turn on my computer.

Nothing better than making the scammer feel like such an idiot.

You should have played along for some more. Definitely wold have been fun.

One time a toner phoner called us while the copier guy was in our office servicing our copier (he supplies our toner as well). I asked “are you with ABC Copiers?”

Phoner- “Yes”

Me- “Whats your name?”

Phoner- “Marcus”

Me- “Thats funny, cause Dave over here is working on the machine and hes never heard of you”

I like the ones we get when they received notification that my system is infected and would like to remote in.

When annoying people like that call, start trying to sell them something.

Consider yourself lucky. We have this one group that calls incessantly from ‘Destination Print’ trying to ship us their third-party toner… and another that says they’re, “from IT and [they] need the serial number off the printer”. I’ve asked them both to remove us from their list so many times… Now I just ask them to hold and set the phone down.

I got a call like that a couple days ago saying my computer is infected blah blah blah … I told them I don’t own a computer only a android tablet so what are they talking about they hung up real quick.

“The information generated from this call is being recorded for training in how to avoid phone scams.”

They usually hang-up before I have a chance to finish the sentence.

It has been a long time since we’ve had the toner and light bulb scam calls. Long distance service scams used to be popular way back when too.

My buddy got one yesterday from “Joe who worked on your computer last time and forgot to tell you to install some software.” Too bad his isolated machine was torn apart or we could have had some fun.

Probably because lack of awareness allowed phone systems to be compromised. We’ve had audits (for free) by our phone system support contractors over the past couple of years.

I’ve had plenty of those and it is funny to mess with them a little bit while you trace the phone call. Just answer NSA and all you hear is dial tone.

I love messing with these idiots when they call. So much fun!

In a previous company a colleague who was responsible for ordering up toner was caught out by one of these calls. They promised a ultra high capacity toner for £250 that would produce 90,000 copies. He agreed to try it and as a thank you they would send him an England Rugby Shirt as they had just won the contract to supply the IRB and had a selection of shirts to give away.

He received some manky old tee shirt that someone had printed England on it. The toner ran out after 3,000 copies were put through it.

He learnt his lesson.

I had some guy call me claiming that he worked for Windows. That made my day.

Never received one of these calls myself yet.

My mother answers them and keeps them on the line for a while. She even tells them at the end “Every minute I keep you on the phone is one less minute you’re scamming someone else” and tries to keep them on the line as long as possible.
