So I work HD at a small IT dept for around 200 users. Me and my boss are the only ones who answer phones, and for some reason we get a lot of scam calls to our IT line. My boss, instead of hanging up, being removed from the list etc. instead takes the calls, and wastes their time, making up fake info, insults etc. Kinda immature, but doesn’t affect me except for when he can’t answer a question cause he’s messing with someone in a cube in India for kicks.

Anyways, today we start getting lots and lots of calls from all over the state. I’m not 100% sure, but it seems an auto dialer is spoofing our IT dept number and we’re getting calls every 10 minutes in from someone who is calling back a missed call on their Caller ID. I’ve gotten confused people all day. Now I get to waste time with this instead of my real job. So thanks boss, next xmas you get a fidget spinner.

It may not be funny to you, but I’m having a blast with the schadenfreude

Ha, spurned hacker gets revenge. It is kinda ironic. I did not realize that Nigerian Princes could be this petty.

That’s a waste of companies time, hope no one from your company is on here reading these posts  I just add to the donotcall registry. Eventually the calls will taper off after a while…

It should be noted that once you answer and confirm its a valid number you will just increase the number of calls you get.

Payback is a bitch

The Do Not Call Registry is utterly useless for blocking scam callers. They are not in the USA and couldn’t care less about US law. Most of the ones in the USA couldn’t care less either, because they know that getting caught violating the list is unlikely.

Just try and sell them something and see who hangs up first.

Agreed. I get more calls now on my cell phone now.

That’s pretty sucky. You should give them the number for support which could be his cell phone number.

I found a solution for you, hope this helps:

  1. Place your phones on Do Not Disturb
  2. On your computer, repeatedly hit Alt+F4 for about 5 to 10 seconds
  3. Turn off the lights in the office
  4. Get in your car
  5. Drive home

James,

Put the Nomorobo app on your cell phone and set it to send identified bad calls to voice mail. It’ll be the best $20/year you ever spend.

My cell phone is set to “vibrate and then ring” on incoming calls. Nomorobo on my phone sends the scum to voice mail, and because most of those calls cannot deal with voice mail, they just drop after half of a vibration…they usually don’t even get a chance to ring! My inbound call rate is 66% scam calls and my wife’s phone it’s 94% of calls being scammers or telemarketers. Every few weeks, I will get one that can make it in and leave a 30-second message. After I installed Nomorobo on my wife’s phone without telling her, she brought it to me a few days later saying it was broken because it wasn’t ringing any more. She had gotten used to 5-8 scam calls a day, and it was only ringing when a few legit people called, so she thought something was wrong with it. She says, “I got my life back!” regarding Nomorobo.

For home phone service that has Simultaneous Ring on it, it’s free. EVERYONE should set it up, especially if one has elderly friends or family.

Nope, still funny, just not to you. It is a matter of perspective.

They should send you some merch.

Thankfully I never really get many scam calls, But usually me and my boss play it to catch them out and they usually hang up. Or we throw the GDPR card in.

However, it does make for a handy prepackaged calling list for them. So I guess it isn’t totally useless, just useless for its intended purpose.

I am so tempted to do this next time this mortgage company calls me wanting to sell something even though I tell them not to call again (they use a local area code but it almost always sounds foreign).

The number of daily spam/robo calls to my mobile phone is now more than legitimate calls. It’s a nightmare that’s getting old. One is calling as I type this now LOL.
