I tried using CCleaner to get rid of AVG registry files on one computer to test whether or not CCleaner could fix the problem. While CCleaner did find some AVG registry files, Spiceworks still thinks AVG is installed on that computer after I told it to rescan. I’m not going to manually go into the registry, so I’ll wait a couple of days to see if a full automatic scan of the network removes AVG from the list of installed programs. In the meantime, I removed the best answer tag so that this discussion is not closed. Sorry for getting back to you guys so late. I talked the issue over with my manager, and he does not want me to tamper with the registry; so for now I really can’t do anything. I think that Spiceworks is including uninstalled programs in the list of installed programs on my network. This is because when I look at Spiceworks’ list of installed programs on the computers in our network, I see that several hundred instances of AVG have been installed. I know we don’t have that many computers running AVG, because my company now uses a different antivirus program, and we have been uninstalling AVG. Since I’m getting false numbers with AVG, I’m concerned that the other software counts are inaccurate as well; how do I fix this problem?

It seems that SpiceWorks may be detecting some fragments in the registry. I have seen a similar issue after uninstalling one version of Office and installing another. SpiceWorks initially reported that both were installed when that was not the case but there were still some registry keys hanging around that were fooling it.
I would check through the registry for any ‘AVG’ items and get rid of them, then try a rescan in SpiceWorks.
Thank you for your response. So if I understand you correctly, the only way to fix this problem is to go on each computer individually get rid of old registry keys?

Pretty much, unless you are able to roll out a script that will take care of it for you across the estate once you’ve found which key(s) are causing the problem.

Something like this might work for helping you with the network cleanup. Business

Have a read through this topic posted some time ago…

It’s got to be a key in the registry you haven’t found yet. Not sure why you don’t want to check the registry manually. As long as you back up your registry before making any changes, you’re covered. Once you’ve found the key that’s causing the issue, you can set about automating removal of the same key throughout your estate.
Thanks, I’ll look into the registry and get back to you guys.
