Inspired by a reddit post today, and it got me thinking too.

If you had an unlimited budget to make a movie based on any game, what would it be/why?

Off the top of my head I’ll say something along the lines of

Metal Gear Solid

Don’t know how it would go, but I bet that would be amazing for fans.

Your thoughts?

Half-Life? Idk, they’ve already done it to all of the good games and the vast majority of them don’t make good movies.

Agreed. There have been a handful of good ones, but mostly eh ones. I wonder how a movie adaptation of Tetris would go. Blocks falling in Russian cities from aliens? I dunno!

Hmmm, for me it would probably be something like Fallout, Dragon Age, or … oh, you know what would be fun? Arcanum!

Aren’t the Metal Gear games basically movies already? MGS4, in particular, was 90% cutscene and 10% optical camo simulator. (I remember the statue easter egg vividly)

Personally, I’d love to see a Cyberpunk 2077 movie.

Whoa! Some cool ideas indeed. MGS4 was for sure mostly that. So I’d be curious how to make it for the big screen since it basically already is. But Cyberpunk! Dude! That would be fun!

Queue forty minute scene of Elaine suffering from dysentery with cinematography mimicking The Revenant. But it’s ok, Charles finds some wild berries.

Do you have the same feeling Amazon Prime is going to butcher Fallout? Dragon Age would be bomb, but would have to be a trilogy to do it justice.

My vote would be KOTOR. While I’m sure it would be terrible, I would totally fund it and also not allow Disney to ruin it (More).

I think another good one would be Horizon: Zero Dawn. That game has such an immersive story and world, I would love to see a movie adaption (Even though playing thorough it was good enough for me)

Edit: I also wouldn’t mind seeing a Mass Effect Movie with an ending that people will accept vs all the controversy of the game.

I mean am I getting to make said movie or is a studio making it based on my recommendation? Because if I don’t have a say in who’s writing or directing the adaptation then I say none of them lol.

If I’m getting to pick writers/directors/showrunners then I’ve got a few choices that I think would be awesome:

  • A Plague Tale (TV series headed by Craig Mazin, largely pending the quality of his The Last of Us adaptation)
  • Hollow Knight (animated film lead by Andrew Stanton and/or Brad Bird; I’m imagining a more somber WALL-E style film, not much in the way of dialogue and mostly physical humor/storytelling, preferably hand drawn/2d instead of computer animated)
  • Blasphemous (gothic horror, Guillermo del Toro would be directing this one)
  • Dead Space (I’d love to see what Alex Garland could do with this, didn’t particularly care for Men but Ex Machina and Annihilation are top tier sci-fi)
  • Red Dead Redemption (TV series headed by Vince Gilligan & Peter Gould; Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are pretty much contemporary westerns and remind me a ton of the Houser’s writing in the games they made with Rockstar, I’d love to see what they could do with a Wild West setting).
  • Dark Souls*Bloodborne**Elden Ring* - Robert Eggers (see: The Witch & The Northman. He’s excellent with visuals and LOVES weird storytelling, it’s a perfect match).

A film based on TimeSplitters would be wonderful! It would make a great action/comedy film if it followed a similar storyline to TimeSplitters 2 & Future Perfect.

I think Dark Age of Camelot would be fun and definitely doable. Multiple race classes, 3 domains to fight in…cool stuff.
