What’s happening Spiceheads.

Anyone else get stopped before you even get to your desk in the morning? Don’t even have your first cup of coffee down, or had a chance to check your emails, and people are stopping you at the door with their issues.

At least it’s Friday.

Take care.

That’s why every IT pro needs an underground bat cave entrance!

I simply tell them I haven’t clocked in yet and as soon as I do I will check the help desk for a Ticket.

“You have submitted a ticket haven’t you”

“Sure, I’ll look at that whilst you make me a coffee.”

I purposely had my schedule changed so I can start at least 30 minutes before everyone else gets in. It is the best 30 minutes of my day.

I am lucky enough to have a very flexible schedule and can set my own hours as long as I put in at least 40hrs a week. Therefore, I come in pretty early so I can work on a few projects before the masses start flowing in.

All the time. Generally the same people.

I hate that. Walking in thinking it’s going to be a nice, quiet day, then BLAM, there’s a user with their sights set on you because “This one thing I do doesn’t work at the speed I’m expecting”

Could be worse… I’ve got the bat phone this week and got a call from our Athens office that their internet is down. At 2:45AM. Guh. Not only am I trying to remember my own name, but trying to dig up the details for the local provider, trying to remember the coutry code for Greece (FYI SpiceFolk it is +30), then trying to get past the fact I speak no Greek (I’m prety sure I have never even pronouced Gyro correctly), etc. An hour later the circuit is up, but everyone’s Outlook is in offline mode. Another 15 minutes getting them all organized. Still no coffee.

Yep. One of those days.

Yup. Story of my life. Happens very regularly. People are always so needy! Lol

Frequently

I make sure I get here before everyone else so I don’t have this problem. =P

Nope. Nobody knows when I come in and when I leave.

I say start a new trend.

IT people need to start asking random questions or info requests etc to those that work in other departments. Say you see that HR person as they walk in the building, ask them relative HR questions, or maybe you see that special finance person at the supermarket…, what better time to hit them up with questions/requests.

Cross paths with the shipping people at lunchtime as they are about to eat their lunch…, no better time to ask about that package you’re expecting, or perhaps other random questions on thoughts for shipping strategies, stock room innovations, etc…

Get creative guys…, start throwing it back!

Joking aside, this is a management problem, not a tech one. Unless you have the higher-ups on your side about this, it won’t change. There needs to be a work policy in place that says that IT will not accept walk-up appointments and that policy must have teeth to it before people will stop doing that.

Wait, you have people say good morning first? I’ve had people just launch into their spiel.

…which is why when they did this, I would look at them like I do my child, say “Good Morning”, wait for them to repeat it, and then tell them I would be with them once my coat was off and I was ready to begin.

Never happens to me because I make sure to come in before anyone is around the offices. Gives me time to get a cup of coffee, check emails and steel myself before the fun begins

“Don’t talk to me before my coffee, you won’t like it…”

Yup. They watch me walk up the stairs and then follow me to my desk. Before I even hang up my jacket, they ask me for help.
