Hi,

I currently have version 7.4.00070 of Spiceworks. I noticed earlier this month that there was an inventory item missing, and I thought that I forgot to entered/scanned or that I deleted by accident. Now there are 3 inventory items missing/deleted and I’m not sure why are those items gone. How can I check in the logs who or how was those items deleted? How can I prevent this from happening again?

Thanks for your help in advance.

are you sure they are not DHCP clients that have been updated?

You can see in your time line if they are recent deletions

Hi Rod-IT,

Those are entries for the DHCP clients, all others has been updated but I don’t see any problem like this. However, I have tried to search for the device by serial number (since I have a backup list from long time ago) and I can’t seem to find it. It is nowhere to be found. I’m not sure what is causing this behavior. I tried to search on Google but can’t find anything so far regarding about this.

Any recent upgrades to SW or any crashes on the server that might have caused a DB corruption?

We haven’t had any recent upgrades for SW or any crashes on the server.

There are two things that could be causing this.

  1. Someone deleted them from your Inventory.
  2. The application thought they were duplicate devices and merged them into other assets.

The application currently has 0 ways for it to delete ANY data on its own. If something is actually deleted from your application, it has to be done by a human operator. There’s a greater chance they were merged into something else.

Hi Peter,

I don’t think people have deleted them from my inventory, or I would have seen that in the timeline. I don’t think is a duplication problem, because that has happened before and I was able to find them with the asset tag number. Is there a way to see if someone delete an entry in the logs? If so, how can I do that? I want to make sure that someone didn’t deleted those entries from the inventory.

Thanks.

Martha,

Hmm, well I should have prefaced that those are the two most likely scenarios; something else could be going on that we just haven’t seen before. Unlikely, but possible.

If you search your production.log files for “InventoryController”, it should show you timestamps and IP addresses of what was edited, and when.

Unfortunately, I believe 7.4 had a bug where deleted devices were not appearing in the timeline. We’ve fixed it - but the fix is in 7.5.

Thank you Peter B.

Jackie,

The problem is not the deleted devices are not showing in the timeline. The problem is that devices that I had scan/entered are not in my inventory anymore. I’m not sure why or how this is happening.

We don’t ever remove devices from your inventory. Thus, if someone else is, you wouldn’t see the deletions of those on your timeline because of that bug. The only reason a device might disappear is if it was an “unknown” and we didn’t see it again for 30 days.

You can take a copy of your database (only a copy!) and look in the devices table in SQLite Manager to see if you can find the serial numbers - to see if they’re in there and somehow our UI is failing. Support can also help you do this, as well as look through your logs to see if they see anything amiss with that device history.
