Boss is on vacation so I come in two hours later to cover down for the next three days.

So, I’m laying in bed, as a bit of an insomniac its about 6:30 having woken up only 4 times already I figured, “meh, I will just stay up, its close enough to the time I wake up anyway (normally 715). Maybe I will even cook breakfast”.

I get a text from my boss “Sever is down, I need you in the office ASAP to take a look at it”. I spring into action, grab the jeans I was wearing last night, a t-shirt on top of the clean (or dirty, don’t remember which is which, no time for smell test) clothes pile, throw on my definitely clean socks, and head for the door. I live fifteen minutes away from work, and bed-to-desk was 17 minutes.

Fixed the critical server, got everyone back up working, through all the "its STILL not working complaints, despite the fact that I created a logon storm and nobody is patient. Everything is up. relief

Then I get the HR Director walking by my cubicle and telling OTHER people that I was late and that people were looking for me about the server. going through another hour of fixing complaints, then the receptionist calls me over right as I am about to run out for a quick breakfast, and she has a customer care rep on speaker, and even HE is saying I was almost 2 hours late… I was so furious that I had to just walk out.

Now to top it off, I am not getting my on-call incentive because I happened to already be awake when the call went out. Put simply, I responded TOO QUICKLY.

I need it to be beer o’clock already.

Sounds like a communication error from your department to the end users with your designated schedule.

Sounds like something to talk to your boss about once he’s back.

That’s the problem, it was my boss’ call. I called him to ask what time I should have a timecard entry, forget that I was legitimately called in early, I am supposed to get a flat four hours on my timecard plus the time that I get the call, until the time the issue is actually fixed as OT (assuming I don’t leave early and make my 40, etc.) I’m basically out about 200 dollars

Sorry to hear you had a rough morning. Glad to hear you got things running smoothly again rather quickly! BTW: Nice response time!!! 17 minutes!!!

On the plus side, I think you’re fortunate. Here, on-call incentive equates to “keep your job” incentive. I always choose that one!!!

And papa really wants a NAS for his home.

As always, relevant XKCD

I’ve seen it before, but today seemed like the day that I print it and hang it at my desk.

So your schedule was adjusted to compensate for working different hours but you were still counted as being tardy? Now you are missing out on being called in on your time off?

Wow, you really need to say something, send an email out or something.

That is basically where I am. This is a relatively new job, and on-call as a new concept (we went to two shifts last week), this whole thing is kinda jacked up. I am stuck between a few concpets; I don’t want to rock the boat, I don’t want to get in trouble for “being late” (I definitely was not), and I want to get paid what I am supposed to.

My boss is not one to play games, I know I can be replaced.

If they’re going to be dicks about it, and your boss won’t stand up for you, you are going to hate your life. Voice your concern!

Its not “the company” that is making the decision, its my boss making that call.

Sounds like you are between a rock and a hard place. I’d complain to your HR group, in writing. And you might also tidy up your CV and start looking for a new job.

So you were on a different shift, and per the policy in place you are supposed to be comped a flat 4 hours for being called in prior to your shift starting. But your old shift had already started so the boss thinks you were supposed to be there already, therefore negating the on call/emergency compensation.

That sounds like a crappy environment to be in if your supervisor won’t back his own word, perhaps it is time to look around for a different gig.

That’s the problem, I have hopped too much and for the most part really like this place. Its the first place that has offered me an Admin position

You have choices.

If your boss can’t make it right, then you either suck it up or leave.

If you decide to stay, get stuff like this in writing.

It’s worth a shot going to HR. If HR says the boss has to pay, then the boss has to pay…unless the boss is also an owner.

But, idk, that “4 hours pay for coming in early…” it doesn’t seem like something that most companies do. I’ve never heard of that before. Hell, no one would ever call me or e-mail me off hours if that was the policy.
