Have Hyper-V 2016 Server loaded on a Gen 10 Proliant server. How can I (or is it even possible) to install the software/agents to monitor and configure hardware (i.e. SmartStorage Administrator, Event Notifier)?

Perhaps they can get you some answers.

Yes there is a possibility, have a look into Servicepack for HPE Proliant Server.
There you should find all Management Tool and Firmware Updates for your server.

You’d be better off, imho, running server core rather than Hyper-V server - but you have options/.
What OS are you runnin in the VMs?

This is closer to Ryan’s expertise and team. I’m still a storage guy (though I’ve done some ProLiant Gen10 videos). In fact, check out my ML Gen10 video from SpiceWorld ! That said, I’m sure Ryan can help with this question.

Excellent thanks. I figured when I tagged you, that if you didn’t know, you would know who to talk you.

I need to develop more “go-to” people on the ProLiant team that I can get help from directly but my list of folks on that team is short - a lot shorter than my storage experts I can get answers from. Thanks for tagging me and always feel free to do that!

I haven’t set up any VM’s yet…but when I do, they will be a mix of Windows Server 2016 and SLES Linux.
I would love to run Hyper-V 2016 Server as a host, but I need the hardware monitoring capabilities to notify of a disk failure, or other event. I’m hoping I don’t have to have a full Windows Server install to run the Hyper-V host to be able to do that.

Hello,
I have asked several people about this issue. I have not received any good responses that can help yet. I was told the quickest way is to contact HPE support and they should be able to resolve the issue fairley easily. If I hear from more people I have asked help from, I will let you know. Thanks

Just as a side note as well, I took over for Kelsea, so feel free to tag me on anything HPE server related, and I will do my best to get questions answered quickly and efficiently!

Jackie and Ryan, thanks for your input. I can certainly reach out to HPE support. If I find anything out, I will let you all know.

Well, I’ve had one technician tell me I should be able to install these tools…another says no and I need to buy an iLO license and use AlertMail for notifications. Still investigating…

I’ve talked to a couple more support professionals at HPE and I don’t think they have a clue what Hyper-V Server 2016 is. When I mention Hyper-V Server they assume I’m talking about VM’s and not the Hyper-V host. I’ve sent links and documentation of what the Hyper-V product is…I’ve got a feeling this is not going to be supported, which means I may be stuck running a full Windows Server install to run the VM host.

I don’t see why you would want that. I think from Gen8 (might be 9) HPE Proliant servers are basicly supposed to be monitored agentless. Afaik this works with the basic ILO license that comes with the system, the advanced license option should not be needed. It might need some settings configured in the ILO, i’m not sure of that it also might just work out of the box. But generally just point the monitoring software you use to the ILO IP and it should detect all drivers / nics / memory etc in the system and monitor it (We use PRTG and it autodiscovers everything basicly when pointed to the ILO IP).

I’m moving from Gen8 servers to Gen10 (never used Gen9). I see it appears everything now is agentless. So in the past, I used agents and HP Event Notifier to notify me of hardware issues. So now, I should use AlertMail within iLO?

If you don’t have external monitoring like Zabbix/PRTG, or maybe spiceworks can do it also (never tested) then yes that would be the current best practise i believe. i’ve never used alertmail myself as we do use external monitoring. I don’t know if alertmail is in de base license though for ILO. it might be feature of one of the higher SKU’s.

With iLO5, yes you must purchase an iLO license to activate AlertMail.
Still playing around with this Gen10 box. I threw a full eval copy of Windows Server 2016 on it just to test different monitoring scenarios. Gotta say, I’m not a big fan so far of agentless management and using HPE SIM. I kinda liked the actual agents installed within the OS and the use of HP’s Event Notifier…it just seemed simpler and easier to use.

Can’t comment on HPE SIM as i’ve never really used it, we use PRTG and there it works really nice and simple, simply configure SNMP on the ILO put the ILO IP in PRTG run a discovery and everything is monitored in a web interface which we can display on a TV screen in de IT department room and ofc setup E-mail alerting.
