Had a power failure overnight, long enough to drain the UPS’. Most of the servers and switch gear came back up okay, but the ISA box decided to be temperamental (as ISA so often does), the SMTP box was sitting on the GRUB menu for some reason and the Unifi controller didn’t want to start because it decided that port 8080 was in use (on the day the ‘laptop in classroom’ thing went live, no less).

Once I got THAT going, we get a ticket from admin saying the IP phones are stuck on Initialising Network. Turns out the ADSL2 router that provides the phones with connectivity packed a mental and died overnight. I quickly repatched reception while my boss went and bought a new router. During this bit we keep getting interrupted by stupid crap like “the projector is out of focus and the students have to squint”. Well sorry but the number we frickin’ advertise is currently disconnected so that’s a LITTLE more pressing.

Once THAT’s fixed we get a call from someone who moved offices over the weekend, didn’t tell us at all and is wondering why her PC and phone aren’t in her new place. WOW I WONDER WHY. I guess she knew that I was secretly and ESPer.

I HATE Mondays.

Makes me lol, it amazes me how much users think their problem is more important than anyone else’s.

I find Monday morning and Friday afternoons at 4ish are the worst.

Feel your pain!

Bonus: I just found out that somebody has put their own personal phone number, unsupplied and unsupported by us, onto marketing materials.

Has anyone gotten strangulation to work over TCP/IP?

Yes Mondays are a painful day but they can be very uplifting, like today… a Monday.

Just today I had

Him - “My printer isn’t working, fix it”
Me - “The printer is working fine, I just walked past it not two minutes ago and people were printing from it”
Him - “No, I have a printer in my office on my desk”
Me - “No you don’t. you use the network printer”
Him - “I got sick of using it so I got my own and charged it back to the IT department”

Well F%^ me but because I was awake and not asleep on autopilot like I am on Mondays

Me - “I’m afraid we cannot support your personal printer as you didn’t clear it with us first. Thank you for letting me know that you have incorrectly charge the business with a personal item. I’ll get that changed and take the cost out of you next wage”

This did not go down to well but because I was in the right, they could not do a thing about it and $500 is now being taken out of his weekly wage.

a win is a win and I’ve been in a mood all day because of it.

Hell yes. That’s what I like to see. We have someone who is… bit of a loose cannon (and insists on being called “Pastor ”, despite not being employed as a pastor. Tosser.) who decided that he’d bring his own laptop and printer in and use those. A rude awakening followed when I blocked the network ports he was using and my boss told him to take his crap home and leave it there. 'least he had the uh, kindness, not to try and charge the company for it.

Nice one, I’m glad you guys collected the funds.

Now I’m not one to enjoy stupid people doing stupid thi… oh I can’t complete this sentence without laughing my ar53 off.

Yes here, I’ve had many like that, people bring in their own laptop and using it to remote into the rdp server on their own 3G card just so they can have a second screen (WTF???) and this was solved by blocking said home computer.

PASTOR???

WHAT ON EARTH BLOODY FOR???

This will be transferred in to the beer fund as it was written off because we didn’t have any records of the $500 in our budget. I’m currently working out how much ink/toner this person has made the company purchase for HIS personal printer. It is my hope that this has been written off also so it can be transferred to the beer fund and taken out of his pay check as well.

One must have stardards and rules and these should be followed. It’s not my fault the business was dumb enough to say yes without consulting said required people/department. If these rules/standards are not met or followed then what would this business or world would be???

Paging Mr Geldof.

Mr Bob Geldof to the Water Cooler please.

I laughed. Especially at the personal printer purchase - glad to see you had some level of control over users.

and the lesson today is How to Die…Pretty much sums up my journey to work this morning. 4X4 pulled out on top of me causing me to slam on my brakes, missed me by a smidgeon. Then 3 cars whizzed through a roundabout in front of me from the left causing me to stop on the roundabout and nearly get hit by a car pulling in from the right. Then a car pulled into the bus lane in front of me to turn left making both me and the bus behind me jam on our brakes. Looks like all the cycle-hating nutters of SW London were out driving this morning.

+1 to Mondays blow.

Walked just over a mile to the station this morning, only when I was just about to go in and buy my ticket for the week did I realise I’d left my wallet and phone at home. Cue a mile’s walk back home to collect it and another mile back to the station.

The only bright spot being: thank f**k I don’t normally have to get the later train, it’s way more crowded than the one I usually get. So as I shoulder my way onito the right train tomorrwo I’ll be thinking “at least it’s not the 8.25”.

And breathe…

Good on you for this!

At least when people get their own equipment here they know we don’t support it. We had one user buy his own ink jet as he needed colour documents for EHS stuff but the company wouldn’t spring for a colour printer as they knew if they did, everyone would want to waste it on stuff that didn’t need colour. He was good in that he never asked us for help with it…then again, he was a bit more knowledgeable than most anyways and rarely asked for help anyways.

winning

I would love to be able to charge back to users.

Love it. Thanks for the post.
