Home based business are not the ideal option as a rule. Most companies that make good money like to see the people working for them. Very few “good” jobs will meet your requirements for second income. that said, there are many online support companies that rely on home-based techs. It keeps their overhead low, but I’m sure pay is low as well since it’s obvious they are trying to cut corners. You may want to apply to some of the online support places and see what they have. I’ve known a few people to get products like Team Viewer and do this sort of thing on the side just advertising services on Craigslist and Kijiji.

the Craigslist thing, do you mean advertise for smb, or home users, if its home users how can i guarantee i will get paid after i finish he work.

Got any friends in the business?

I do side jobs for a friend who runs his own IT Consultant company. He gives me the odd home computer to reload and i help with his domain conversions.

Other than that i would be careful offering Small Business Repair. Without experience with SMB server you can get in over your head quickly. You could offer via local ad, home PC cleanup and repair. As for getting paid, well that is just the gamble you take when dealing with people. Collecting on bad checks is a pain in the butt.

Yea i agree

Home users are best. Business comes with the potential for liability that you don’t want to take on. (Unless it’s through someone else that has Errors and Omissions Insurance.)

As for how to ensure you get paid, ask for money up front for parts and software so you’re not out of pocket. Then you’re just risking your time.

I’ve found that the home repair market, at least around my neck of the woods, is more of a PItA than it’s worth. I’ll take the free time and the opportunity to step away from computers, rather than the nickel and dime payments from people who use laptops as dinner plates. It didn’t take me long to get burned out on that.

Good luck! Let us know if you find anything.

Yeah the home PC repair market around here is a joke. There are people that advertise on Craigslist saying that they’ll “fix anything for $5”. Are you kidding me? You would lose money on that deal just driving to their house. They probably have no idea what they’re doing but there’s no easy way to compete with people offering such ridiculous prices.

No, that’s because I’m watching other people strip on webcam.

Besides, that wouldn’t be a lucrative job… People would pay more for me to keep it on than to take it off.

If you get out of IT for the second job, you could take orders. It’s minimum wage work, but at least it’s more reliable and less hassle. All of the pizza places in the Toronto area tend to use home-based order takers. They are large enough companies you’ll never worry how you’ll get paid.

It is the same where I am so many ma and pa PC shops that rip the customer off saying they will backup data and reinstall for $50.00

I have heard from so many people that have got burned as nothing is backed up or migrated to the new pc just the OS is loaded. They come to me after the fact and ask if I can help. I have stopped advertising my consulting business and only do word or mouth for that reason.

You’d make better scratch delivering pizzas.

I came a cross a company that offers p/t remote support work from home.

They basically provide you with a shift slot on any given dates that you are available.

All you need is good broadband connection, and landline phone for receiving customer calls.

Sorry but I cant remember their name…but if you google it im sure you will come across them.

I’m a big fan of working overnight in hotels.
