Video games hold rich stories full of well-known characters and worlds we all get immersed in. While we can get lost in a game the idea of taking the story to the big screen is something many big budget film agencies are taking full advantage of. 2016 will see the beginning of several video game based movies including the recently announced Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV full length movie, Warcraft based on World of Warcraft, and Ratchet and Clank . The idea of taking a well-known game and making a movie out of it can be fun, so long that it stays true to the story and characters. While we may see some divergence from the originals (we’re looking at you Battleship…ok, technically not a video game, but come on…a movie about Battleship???), keeping close to the settings and characters that make the game great can really make for a great movie.
What games would you like to see be made into a full length feature film? Which is your favorite video game adaption so far, and why is it Super Mario Bros ?

Assassin’s Creed Movie they are making that comes out next year I think. And they are doing it correctly by not having it tie into anything within the current story in the game so that they can avoid contradictions, and people bitching about canon lore.
What I mean is that it will have nothing to do with Desmond or any of his ancestors (directly at any rate)

Yeah, Assassin’s Creed looks promising. It’s got a good cast, a good director and Ubisoft are actively involved. It’s the most hopeful I’ve been about a game adaptation in a while.
My favourite adaptation so far would have to Silent Hill even though it wasn’t great.

They need to make Uncharted, rather than another Indiana Jones movie.

Skyrim the Movie. I’d want to see the part where the imperial guard asks who the player character is and they just stand there morphing races, genders, shapes etc for 30 minutes.

A God of War movie would be violently good.

I have to say I’m generally weary of 99% of video game movies but I’ve always loved the stupid over-the-topness of the Resident Evil movies. A close second would probably be Wreck-It Ralph. The others have not been so impressive. With that said, I feel like when you have between 40-120+hrs of lore and story woven into a game/character, it’s really hard to translate that properly to a 2hr movie. I think we could see a lot more accurate and well-liked adaptions by going the Netflix route of dropping a 10 episode series on people. Imagine a well adapted Witcher series, or Bioshock or some other great series done with the same budget and talent as most Netflix shows.

“Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie” is probably still my favorite game to movie adaptation. The one where Chun Li has that sick as hell fight with Vega in her apartment.
As for what I would like to see made from a game into a movie, it would need to be something with a relatively loose story that can be twisted and bent from a 10 to 40 hour experience into an hour and a half without losing too much of the spirit of the original. Shin Megami Tensei: Soul Hackers and Strange Journey come to mind. There’s a lot that could just be cut and keep the main story arch going, but they would both probably end up as Sci-Fi B Movies if they weren’t animated.
For something that might actually be successful: Devil May Cry. Considering how hard the Resident Evil movies were pushed and how “Summer Movie” they were, it was baffling that they didn’t just do the same with DMC. The stupid slow motion action stuff would have even worked fine for DMC.
The good thing with The Witcher is it is based on a series of Novels and not the other way round so the movie potential is very good. I believe they made a TV series or very low budget movie of it in Poland. Don’t watch it…

Street Fighter…ahh maybe not
Mortal Combat!..errrr no
Mario Bros!..hmmmm
Solitaire: The Movie. It’d be about a bad-boy high school kid almost turning dropout who gets pulled into underground solitaire rings with a nefarious “dude who has never been beaten” character. It would be full of bad card puns and would have the obligatory romance with the “solitaire-master’s” lady-friend.
On a serious note, if I can’t have Half Life 3 can I get a movie? That might be weird to hear Gordon talk, so maybe just a movie in that universe would be a nice workaround.

Solitare the movie sounds a bit like the IT Crowd countdown episode.

You caught me! But to be fair, I’ve seen that basic premise in some movies as well.

With the Warcraft movie, I get that they want to start at the beginning and tell the whole story, but my worry is that the first might flop, and if it does, no more Warcraft movies. Or the second flops, and again, no more Warcraft movies. Because I really want to see the movie that goes over Warcraft 3 / Frozen Throne and the first 3 expansions of WoW… primarily just to get to the parts about Arthas, who is like my favorite villain ever.
I also will feel bad if the movie flops horribly, because yeah, I was a WoW addict for a long time. If the movie just makes it look stupid, then I’ll look stupid.

ActiBlizz own a TV/Movie studio now so chances are this stuff isnt going to go away.
but yes it will be sad if it flops, but I know Blizzard is all excited because now they can tell the story properly all the way through.
I also cannot wait for WC3 and Frozen Throne movie versions.

Warcraft movies… Starcraft movies… these are what I want…
Also, if wishes were horses…
a Sam N Max Hit the Road movie, a Day of the Tentacle movie, and a Full Throttle movie would be swell…
A Starcraft movie could be really fun. Maybe done in the style of Starship Troopers?

OMG Full Throttle!! I need to replay that, I wonder if it’s on GoG.com or something…
League of Legends would have interesting story lines

They own a TV/Movie studio so it is probably going to happen. There is a LOT more to the Starcraft universe than Raynor and Friends. Blizzard has also expressed interest in giving us more about Starcraft so I think it is a pretty safe bet that we will be getting stuff Soon™.
