That moment before your company implements a new password policy on the network. The calls have literally been non stop its quite amusing at this point. But does anyone else have any great spicy stories they want to share with the world of passwords?

What are some of your examples?

What kind of warning was there? We implemented one last year, I guess my spicy story would be there weren’t any calls.

Good lord. Were any users notified of changes? We have single sign on for just about EVERYTHING here! You reset a user’s password, they might not have the proper credentials to use the restroom!

“What do you mean I can’t use my name as a password”

Is this my email password, my computer password, my internet password or the password that I use to log in to webmail?

I work in a College Campus. I reset a password for one of our students yesterday. I always reset to “password” and have the student change password at first logon.

I kid you not, this student could not spell “password”. I went up to the classroom and had to type in the word “password” for her and then she was able to change it.

Whoa!!! Thought this was in reference to HALO!!

We recently bumped our requirements from 8 characters to 14 and boy that did not go over well with the users so we settled with 12.

Same user, 7 password resets in 2 days…

From a doctor: “I shouldn’t have to remember my password. The clinic manager can do it. That’s why she’s here.”

During a recent password audit, IT discovered a blonde was using the following password:

MickeyMinniePlutoHueyLouieDeweyDonaldGoofySacramento

When they asked why such a long password, she said she was told that it had to be at least 8 characters long and include one capital.

I love when my users forget that their passwords expire, and go into panic mode when they can’t access their Office 365 email, then I have a bazillion calls about their email not working…

So there I was, minding my own business, when all of a sudden, the boss came in with a message. No Such Agency wanted everyone to start using generated passwords – 64 characters long. So I went to the site, told it to make me 50 passwords 64 characters long.

So – what had happened was, after a week of constantly resetting users’ passwords, I decided to go back to the old-fashioned way of doing things, 14 characters.

Same here. I sent out one email explaining the change, got a couple of requests for clarification, made the change the next week and never got a call.

Get him/her a new keyboard.

This has got me scared. I am planning on rolling out a password policy (Not really new, the old IT guy didn’t have one and I like this thing called security, kind of a fan) to people who have been using the same password for over 8 years.

I’m lucky we still have a receptionist in my building so all calls are screened! I have a list of folks who get put through, everyone else goes to voicemail. If I were you I would put a message on my voicemail describing the changes and tell them to open a ticket if they still have questions or issues. You gotta get stuff done!!

At least it’s still a decently strong password, unlike most of those stories!
