I can’t believe how many invitations I receive from people I have no clue who they are. Anyone else have this issue?

well it is just a way for recruiters to send semi legit spam

Constantly

Yeah i get it too. Its annoying but at least you dont have to accept, and you can change your settings so you only get messages/invites from certain people

Usually recruiters. Not sure why they focus on 1 keyword for a project I supported but never used myself. Get job spam for AX and solidworks designers. (they clearly haven’t read the rest of the profile to realise I work in IT not graphics design).

if they are agencies, and I have used / heard of said agency, I accept

otherwise bin

there used to be a book list too ? no longer around, I got a few from that, oddly enough, but in recent times the unsolicited ones do seem to be on increase

and at a time when the value of the site appears to be in freefall, as it is trying to be all things to all people

why have a ‘like’ button for an employment / professionals site ?

I get very few, maybe I should be thankful that nobody is interested in my skillz?

Same, I’m rarely contacted. I suppose that means that I have no marketable skills. Or maybe that I’m intimidating. Yeah, that’s probably it.

Tell me when it’s safe to come out:

I feel like I’m the only one on this site who has never even gone to the linkedin site, let alone created an account.

I occasionally get some from recruiters. I get 1 to 2 a week from sales reps at various companies. I just click the Ignore button and be done with it. I don’t need to connect to a rep from XYZ Co. and start getting calls and emails about their latest product that I should spend 30 minutes on the phone with them finding out if it’s a good fit for my environment.

Nope your not the only one. I am in the same boat.

Don’t have time for it to be honest. Not knocking it, just don’t care to join it or have the time.

That’s actually the biggest complaint I hear about LinkeIn. And partially why I don’t have an account on there.

I get it fairly often, I usually deny them. because I’m not looking for a job, and they would probably just send me spam anyways.

We had someone create an account here and then somehow gave their account permission to spam everyone on their contact list with invite requests, which was followed by everyone running to my desk for a week to ask about the linkedin spam and if it was safe or not and what to do with it. Really annoying.

One nice thing about linkedin is their new resume builder. Assuming your profile is filled out with a lot of detail, it produces very nice resumes in .PDF for free. Put my old one to shame.

I love the fact that you can see who has viewed your profile. It’s like OkCupid but better.

I’m on LinkedIn. Even as someone looking for a full-time gig, I find a lot of recruiters on LinkedIn pretty annoying. Just because I listed “Java” as a skill I have (because like most colleges, most of the programming classes I have ever taken were in Java) doesn’t mean I’m a “Senior Java EE Web Developer”. Even if they do send a relevant job posting, often they don’t even respond when you reply.

And heck, maybe I am qualified for their “Senior Java Developer” role. But how bout making the job description match the actual position.

I had a phone interview for a Linux Admin position where the recruiter found me on LinkedIn: The first few questions they asked were softball questions, then asked me if I have ever written Kickstart scripts. I told them, “well no, I’ve never had to do a huge deployment where it was worth the time to write Kickstart scripts” “Oh sorry, we’re looking for somebody with experience writing Kickstart scripts, have a good day. ” I’m sitting there holding the phone thinking “how hard is it to learn how to write Kickstart scripts?”.

My biggest gripe with LinkedIn is that it considers ALL of New Hampshire part of the “Greater Boston Area”. I’m over 2 hours away from Boston. I’m closer to Springfield, MA which has it’s own LinkedIn area. Boston does not appeal to me. I’ve heard of people 4 hours away from LA being listed in the LA area. LinkedIn needs to fix their search so that job seekers can choose the areas they are interested in working, or at least have search by distance. Just because someone lives in Southern Connecticut, doesn’t mean they want to work in New York City.

I probably get 2-3 per day of people that I don’t know. It’s crazy. I truly hate LinkedIn. It’s just a spam service.
