My boss the, “IT Manager”, has no formal experience or education in the IT field. I am honestly not sure why she is the IT Manager because she performs no IT functions to speak of, and would not have the skills necessary to do so if it was requested of her. I am not saying she is a bad boss, in fact she is one of the best bosses one could have. I just think it is kind of strange that I have an IT Manager that can’t understand a damn thing I say half the time, or worse, just pretends to understand what I say half the time… Anyone else in a similar situation?

You kidding? I never had an IT Manager that knew anything about IT. Most, if not all, were just accountants or HR manager types.
What you got is normal. My worst boss (technical wise) I had to go in and turn on her computer for her every day since she could not remember where the power button was. I’m not joking.

At least your IT manager knows they know nothing. I had an old IT manager that thought they knew what they were doing and constantly made things worse and even explained things wrong to the board saying a product we were looking at getting did things it didn’t.

Had lots of those. They are the most frustrating.

My IT manager has an IT background so to speak but has no idea what a Zero Client is when we were discussing upper management requests. He also updates the website in ways that breaks code. He knows IT but thinks he knows more than he really does. Kind of like some users I know

I am the IT manager, but I have no financial/management experience. With the exception of the military

Tell them you’re going to “reach-out” to your “federated” contacts and put everything in the “cloud” to better “grab the low hanging fruit” at the same time maintain your “ROI”.

Is this person’s title IT Manager, or are they just a manager who IT people report to? I’ve been in positions where the “IT Coordinator” or “Assistant IT Manager” reports to a manager who is not in IT, which is normal. I think it’d be odd for someone to be an IT Manager and not have any technical experience.

Wow reading these makes me feel really lucky! My IT Director is an IT Genius, yet he is about as humble as you can get. He is a programmer by trade, but knows so much about networking, hardware, and just about everything else IT. He is passionate about his field . Top all that off with his love of Spiceworks and he is just about the perfect boss, except for maybe the eyerolls I get occasionally lol.

The CEO of a company does not know how to do every job in the company…Same thing. I report to the COO and he knows very little about IT.

That is pretty much common in many companies. It is sad, because when it comes time for budget or personal reductions, they always cut the meat instead of the fat, making a bad situation even worst.

One of my last boss’ was the same way… he got drafted into the IT Department in early adoption, because he raised his hand, and no one else wanted it… He was a maintenance and operations manager previously. By the time I knew him, he knew a little about IT, but you could tell he didn’t have the ‘gift’, but just made do as best he could. I kinda felt bad when I would explain stuff to him, and him have a glazed look over his face. But thankfully, he trusted me, so it was pretty easy to work with him… if it was the other way around, he would have been the worst boss ever.

I had a manager who’s degree was in hospitality and used to manage a hotel. I think it was cheaper than hiring somebody who understood the industry.
What really kills me though is today we got in an order of 3 new transformer laptop/tablets for training purposes and new hire sign ups. The package arrives (with my name on it) so I open it and start charging them up. My boss comes back from lunch and starts packing them up and put them back in the box. She stated that these were to go directly to her office and I should not have opened the package, and that certain securities needed to be setup on them before anyone could use them. It baffled the shit out of me since I am the one that will be setting everything up on them.
