Amazingly accurate article. Wow. Spot on and a great read.
That was indeed a good read, thanks for sharing.
I too have had that link bookmarked for many years, and occasionally pull it out as a reminder on what I’m doing right, and what I can improve. I’ve even forwarded it on once.

I almost cried at just how point-on this entire article is, to the point of actually contacting the author and thanking him for it.

So, so true. I’m sending that link to our HR person.

It’d be true… …if IT pros were people. But we all know we’re just extensions of our computers, right? …right? lol

Excellent article. However, I’m not a fan of “geek” to me personally (and me alone) I find it trivializes my experience and education.

I really can dig the comparison of IT folks to doctors, both professionally and socially. We can’t fix what’s wrong unless we’re given a bread crumb or two, then we can find our way through to the problem and fix it; with that said, we can’t go out in public without being asked for free advice (with a doctor, people with ask, you know, I’ve had this stomach ache for a week…with IT pros, it’s "my {insert computing device here} has been acting very strange).

Wow, my last day is next Friday. I wonder if I should send this to my manager right now or if I should wait. The article does accentuate a lot of the issues we have had over the last 2 years.

Right at the beginning of the article I thought to myself, “But, I don’t like jerks even if they are right.” Then I realized that the people that never call are all potentially jerks and I would never know it because they don’t call. I tend to speak well of them without really knowing them simply because I never have to know them. There are plenty of nice people that thank me for my time that cause my muscles to all tense up when I see their names because they always have a way of making the simplest issues hard.
Great article, and so much of it hit pretty close to home.

well written, not often something 7 years old is still strongly relevant in the Tech world.

It’s an article I have hanging on my bulletin board since I printed it in 2009. One of my bosses looked at it once.

FTFA: I think every good IT pro on the planet idolizes Dr. House (minus the addictions).
No…

I love how he tries to compartmentalize and reinforce stereotypes that are often perceived instead of true.

This applies to so many professions just not IT. When I worked at the prison the saying was “Respect was a two way street” Meaning that if I wanted the prisoners to respect me I had to respect them as well. I am not saying respect them for why they are in prison. Respect that they are an individual human being that still has some rights, also respect that they nearly outnumbered us at times 75 to 1. I dealt with all prisoners honestly and justly. My job wasn’t to punish them. My job was to keep them in prison, and to make sure it was as safe as possible for them. Honestly my #1 rule for me and my officers was to go home at the end of the shift every night, alive. It saved my life actually. I was dealing with an offender who was trying to go into my housing unit I was the supervisor of but he wasn’t allowed in there. He belonged to another housing unit. I caught him and then he attacked me. I grabbed him by his shirt to prevent him from going further into the housing unit and he turned around and kicked me in my knee. This caused me to fall and he proceeded to jump on me. However other offenders nearby yanked him off of me because I had earned their respect by not treating them like they are subhuman.
