If I have 5 O365 business premium users do I need to download the software for each user form their O365 login or is the installation tied to the user via their login? IE, can I download it once and install it many times. I thought it was based on the licensed user not the install.

I’m asking because I just downloaded office 365 one time and installed it on two computers. I logged into install one with licensed user “A” and install two with licensed user “B”. When I look under Office installs in the portal neither user has any installs listed.

Also, what’s the best way to control updates so users don’t have to mess with it?

Thanks

You have to use the Office Deployment Tool linked above.

If not, it will show the install as being assigned to the person who downloaded the installer and not necessarily the user and eventually activation issues will start popping up.

For 5 users I wouldn’t waste the time with getting the ODT configured - I’d just log in on each machine as the user and do the install manually.

That’s not true. I download it from a single user all the time and it activates just fine when signing in with the appropriate user. However if you want to push it to a user with something like PDQ deploy that deployment download is the right way to go.

Thanks. I was just reading the same thing. I didn’t mess with the toolkit as it seemed overkill for 5 users. So, can I now just go to each user and download the software from their login and then install it over the current “shared” login? Or can I change the installation link via powershell or other script?
How long before activation issues start popping up?
Also, can I as an administrator get each users “correct download” without having to bother them? I obviously don’t have everyone’s password.
BTW, anyone know how to map existing Local AD users to existing O365 users with Azure AD in order to sync passwords? Everything I keep finding is for brand new O365 users which works just fine but doesn’t help me.
Thanks

I think it’s 30 days before it starts giving issues. You don’t need to download - just do an Online repair from control panel and it will fix the problem. There also is a registry key you can deleted to do the same but I’ve had inconsistent results with that method.

AADConnect is what you want to sync passwords, including existing users. Read up on that.

Just install it as one of the Users in Office 365 and it will suffice. If you cannot login with their account then setup ODT and use PDQDeploy and install it.

AD Connect is the replacement of DirSync which allows to sync with your AD. Make sure to choose carefully that route before doing so, any AD changes to the account like deletions will delete the mailbox in Office 365 so be careful.

When I’ve moved a PC to a new User (and not re-imaged) I’ve had to reassign O365. This method has always worked for me:
