I think we nearly all agree that Ubiquiti wireless access points are the best bang for the buck. They don’t do everything great but they do it well enough for the low price that is hard to complain about. They’ve added chat support which is great compared to their formerly email and forum only support.

For firewalls I love the ease of setup and great support from Meraki but I can’t justify the price they are asking for their switches. About 9 months ago I bought a UniFi 48 PoE switch and it was unreliable after power outages (losing it’s config). I swore about 6 months ago that I wouldn’t buy another UniFi switch since I thought it was too much of a beta product. Since then there have been a few new firmware releases (one addressed my bug). Due to WAN increases I’m considering replacing old Cisco 100/100 switches (probably 7-10 years old) for gigabit speeds. The Cisco equipment has been rock solid in terms of stability, while I don’t have smartnet I do have spares on hand. I found out the hard way that UniFi RMA is a slow process (took about a week) when I needed one for an Edge Switch that wasn’t critical but I was expecting a next day RMA. You get what you pay for and you need to have spares on hand.

Will you buy UniFi switches? If you already have how has you experience been? Did they add a console port?

I’ve bought one; it’s for a company that I do consulting for and a Cisco/Procurve equivalent was not in the price range.

If you’re not pushing much traffic through them, I might go that route again; if you’re looking for something critical that gets a lot of traffic, I wouldn’t.

Just replaced a few Cisco 2950s with Unifi switches. They are just edge switches, for connecting end points. So far so good. Wish the controller provided more stats for the switches, but hopefully that will come with future versions. I have a couple switches in my drawer/closet to throw in just in case one of them decides to die.

Unifi switches, I don’t understand the POE obsession. They really need to make a non POE Unify Switch, they’ll fly off the shelves.

In the UK, I can buy 1000+ Ubiquiti POE switches easily, non POE versions? There are maybe 50? In all of the UK available.

Look at the Edgeswitch lite. The lite just means it does not have POE, they are stand alone without the controller, log into a web interface to manage them.

Great performance & been rock solid so far. Console port is on the EdgeSwitches too.

Personally I have no use for the Unifi switch, can’t even do a 1/4 of what the Edge Switch can do. Central Management is nice and all, but if you want to get what you pay for, the Edge switch IMO is a way better way to go. I’ve only deployed 1 Unifi switch, and ended up swapping it out with a Edge due to the fact I was tired of dealing with the limited capabilities of the Unifi, but this is just my 2 cents…

I have deployed several of their Unifi switches of various sizes and have had no issues with any of them… like the OP said they have improved greatly since the first firmware release with new features and bug fixes.

I think the POE obsession is because the bulk of the people purchasing unifi switches also use other unifi gear like the APs and they want to ensure everything will work nicely together without needing accessories or injectors.

Personally I love the fact that even the 8 port switch is POE capable even if it does cost a little more

I’ve deployed 11 of the unifi switches with another ready to be added. I haven’t had any problems with them, but I do understand the complaints about limited functionality. For my edge switches, though, I don’t need the more in depth features, and the single console is very convenient, and setup of additional switches is very quick.
