Hi all,

I’m reasonably new to the Spiceworks world and have just set up a remote collector at one of our other sites to aid in the cataloguing of their installed software in preparation for compatibility testing for our pending windows 7 upgrade.

Unfortunately it appears to be eating bandwidth and knocking out the site to site VPN that its using to connect back to home.

Its also making RDC almost impossible to the remote server.

Has any one else had similar problems and if so how did you manage to resolve them?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry no one has got back to you.

I have just had a read though and I dont think there is anything Spiceworks can do.

The only thing I can think of is setting the scan speed to slow.

Other than that Spiceworks will just try to use as much as it needs without thinking about other programs.

{"@type":"Person
[{"@type":"Answer

James,

Are you having the remote collector scan outside the local subnet or over the VPN?

You should only see data being transmitted between your primary and remote collector once the scan completes and the data is packaged.

Robert,

I have it set up so that my main install is located on a server with the address of X.X.1.3 (X.X.1.0 /24) and that scans the internal network of what I shall call site A.

Site B, the remote site, has the same beginning 2 octs in the IP address but is X.X.140.X in stead of …1.0 (X.X.140.0 /24)

At the remote site the install is sitting on the server X.X.140.1 and is configured as a remote collector to use our VPN to send the data back via. and its only scanning the X.X.140.0 /24 range

I think its about an 8 meg ADSL line at site B and its a, very good, 4 meg SDSL line at site A. I was hoping that by using the remote collection method that it wouldn’t effect the day to day connection between the 2 sites. Could it be possible that the scan frequency on the remote collector is set to regularly for the bandwidth and subsequently hogging the line?

Thanks for the reply akp, it’s not so much a what can Spiceworks do to alleviate this problem but a has any one else with a similar setup of a remote collector been having a problem of bandwidth being eaten and a vpn being being dropped because of traffic the remote collector is chewing up, and if so what was your cure.

The other interesting thing to note is that it didn’t start straight with the bandwidth eating it. It took somewhere between 3-6 weeks to appear and bring the connection to a grinding halt.

Thanks Again James

{"@type":"Person
big-james
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/big-james"}}]}}
