Hi all,

while this has probably been covered extensively, what is the best method for getting accurate scans of my network?

the most common error is “No open ports for this device were found to be responding”.

what is the most common cause of this and is it a thing that I have to rectify it by changing settings on each PC manually.

It is something that needs to be configured on each computer. It maybe possible to do via Group Policy, but we dont use Group Policies so Im not sure about that.

ok thanks. i tried the cmd prompt - wmic /user:USER_NAME /password:USER_PASSWORD /node:IPADDRESS systemenclosure get serialnumber

and got RPC Unavailable so i tried the steps for WMI:

netsh firewall set service remoteadmin enable subnet

and tried again.

trouble is, when i scan that IP address x.x.x.111 (lets say) that i got from ipconfig, the scan gets to 99% and doesn’t come back with anything - not even in the timeline.

so if i check the PC name, it has already been scanned before (with the “no open ports” error) but the IP address listed in the devices is x.x.x.222 (the IP address it was on last week). if i click rescan it gives a timeline entry but nothing changes.

so many questions:

Which IP address did it actually scan?

why is it that it scanned before but now wont update the info because of the no open port error? nothing about the laptop has changed.

i did get a good scan thanks. i tried a win 7 PC first:

and i got this “No open ports for this device were found to be responding.”

then i ran the script in bytesnake’s 2nd point above (community.spiceworks.com/scripts/show/181-resolving-spiceworks-unknowns-unofficial)

and it scanned ok the 2nd time (clicking rescan).

also just tried it on a win XP machine.

not wanting to question you but how safe is this script?

The script is safer at WinXP then Vista/Win7 as there is no UAC :wink:

The script was published by our double Pure Capsaicin - @akp982 , so I think it`s safe.

Serious, I used that script in the past too.

i ran it first on a Win 7 pc with lines 37-39 included.

on the XP machine I ran it with those lines taken out.

as i mentioned earlier, both worked. but will it work on win 7 with those lines taken out? i will try soon and see.

If you run this script at Vista/Win7 without lines 37-39, you have to follow this additional: http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/317

If you run this script at Vista/Win7 with lines 37-39, UAC will be disabled.

If you run this script at XP with lines 37-39, the lines will be ignored as WinXP doesn`t have UAC.
