I recently decided it’s time to pursue my CCNA and pick up some older equipment. My current employer doesn’t have any they want to get rid of, and CBT Nuggets lists a recommended list to check out. I’m having a hell of a time finding gear in the price ranges they’ve listed, in most cases it costs more to ship it than the equipment itself. Are there any other places I can check other than eBay that may sell old or refurbished routers and switches?

Local craigslist maybe.

What are you looking for? I have old cisco stuff that I cannot get rid of if you’d like. I see you are in Canada, so I’m not sure how much it’d cost to ship it to ya. PM me.

Very interested! Apparently I can’t send new private messages yet, are you able to message me?

eBay, or just use GNS3. http://www.gns3.com/

What about virtual? (GNS3, NetSim, etc)

One thing to try is surplus sales. I don’t know how it works and Canada, but in the US government/public entities have to surplus equipment. Often times they surplus gear just because it’s completely depreciated but still functions fine.

That was my first thought, but we’re not a Cisco partner so I don’t have access to the IOS images. That’s the biggest hurdle…I know there are other places but I’d rather not do that if I can avoid it. Virtual would be a lot easier, IMO, but part of me really wants to have the physical equipment too.

Wanna buy a used ASA 5510? It’s just sitting here in my way, I’d rather it get used.

Local craigslist or local tech recyclers. Old Cisco equipment is usually pretty cheap. Not sure how it is in Canada, but we find a ton of used networking stuff in high rises where businesses just leave it in their suites when they move or go out of business. Talk to some of the building engineers in larger tech centers, they and the management companies will literally sell that stuff for pennies on the dollar.

I found this:

Their prices seem pretty reasonable for what you get.

Thanks guys. I’m waiting for a guy who’s been touch and go all week on Kijiji (similar to Craigslist) but says he’d sell me 4 2950 switches and 4 2600 series routers for $100. I have to source the cards for the routers but have found some cheap ones within Canada on eBay. Everything should land well within my budget.

Not sure what extent of gear you are looking for. But Efurb.com has some refurbished networking gear, not sure if it will suit your needs but it is worth a shot! All their stuff has a 1 year warranty and I believe it is all manufacture refurb’d so you know the issue actually got fixed.

Check with the local electronics recycling places as some here fix up/clean up the equipment that they get in and sell off some of it really cheap.

+1 to Alex’s suggestion of finding a local recycler. Drive/call around if you have to; it will be worth it though.

CXTec. They have good stuff that is fairly current at a reduced price. They even warranty it as if it were new.

I was going to say eBay also for physical equipment…but packet tracer for software. However gns3 seems pretty :o

Even though software isn’t the best solution for real environments it will help you pass the CCNA. When it comes to passing the CCNA I recommend being able to do ACL’s in your sleep. The test has questions like “if this portion of the company can use FTP but this portion cant, what ACL would you use to control this” and then you have to write that ACL…from memory. There are no tabbed or ? options in the test to help you.
