Hey guys I’m new here. Just getting started with my IT career and I’m looking at getting a few certifications to help me along my way. Getting ready to study for CompTIA Net+ and CCNA. I have taken a CCNA class years ago but need to refresh and study all that is new in the world of computers.

My question is does anyone know of somewhere to find used equipment on the cheap? Not looking for much just a nice setup to practice on. Doesn’t have to be CISCO but I thought that would help when I move on to CCNA.

Thanks

@Cisco

+1 for ebay… I’ve purchased routers with WIC’s for 15$ on ebay… they work fine for educational hardware, or as parts.

In addition to ebay, I’ve found stuff on craigslist.

CXtec can also help! Lifetime warranty as well. Check us out!

+1 for ebay here too. That is what I used for my CCNA class. the IOS will be old but it will be good enough to learn with.

eBay, Craigslist (might be able to barter with people to trade things you have for their networking equipment)

You should use PacketTracer You’ll be able to use cisco stuff and build large networks without spending a butt load of money. If you can’t find a download link PM me and I’ll hook you up.

Either packet tracer if you just want to play with the console, or ebay or alternate second hand store type place
TradeMe for NZ, Gumtree for Aus etc etc…

Just so you know:

From Wikipedia:
While Packet Tracer aims to provide a realistic simulation of functional networks, the application itself utilizes only a small number of features found within the actual hardware running a current Cisco IOS version. Thus, Packet Tracer is unsuitable for modeling production networks.

We were given access to the Packet Tracer software when I was in school and the teacher even told us not to use it since it did not have all of the commands available that we were learning in class. Full Disclosure: I took this class almost 10 years ago but I would expect that the experiences still apply based on what Wikipedia says.

I used packet tracer all throughout my CCNA clases and never had trouble with it. When i started taking classes for CCNP is where it went hairy. If its just to study for the CCNA Packet Tracer should work just fine.

Thanks guys… I am looking for the PacketTracer download for the short term but will definitely look on ebay for some cheap equipment. I checked out CablesAndKits.com and they seem to have some pretty good deals.

Thanks again!!!

here is my trick for cisco deals on ebay:

do a search and when you find an item, check out the seller’s other items to see what kinda business they do on ebay.
when you find a seller that seems to just be listing lots of random old hardware, save them as a favorite seller.

(there are recycling/disposal companies that buy or pickup HW from businesses and sell them on ebay)

now create an ebay saved search for cisco from these sellers and you will be notified automatically when they add something…

most of the time the employees will be listing tens of items at a time and will be too lazy to put a good picture/description… and you can use that to your advantage and find items other people are not seeing much.

Using this method i have bought many $100-200 routers for $10-20

another trick, I found a few local sellers within 15 miles of me that allow for free pickup… saves quite a bit on heavy cisco items

happy hunting!
