This month we are celebrating the following holidays:

1. National Pepper Month!!

I read in the newspaper that y’all might be into spicy things. Good, because November is National Pepper Month! I’m sure people other than me will celebrate and enjoy peppers-a-plenty, but I’ll take mine mild, please. With chocolate milk.

Related Task: tell us about the hottest pepper you’ve ever tried…was it on purpose? How did you feel after?

Alternatively, if you’re not into breathing fire, do you have a favorite peppery dish/etc?

2. Sandwich Day

November 3rd is Sandwich Day, and to quote a fictional hero of mine, Liz Lemon: “I believe that all anyone really wants in this life is to sit in peace and eat a sandwich." Hear, hear, Liz. For our local friends in Austin, TX - the best sandwich in your town is the Rumbera arepa from Four Brothers Venezuelan. You’re welcome.

Related Task: tell us what go-to sandwich is? What makes it your go-to? Is it the sandwich or the place or maybe the random little thing they serve on the side?

Alternatively, I know not everyone loves sandwiches like I do, but we could debate the definition of a sandwich all day. What are the requirements? What are the disqualifications?

3. Veteran’s Day

First of all, if you’re a veteran, thank you. Second, November 11th is Veteran’s Day here in the States - if you’re unaware, it’s our national holiday to celebrate the service and sacrifice of our various military personnel.

Related Task: tell us a story! Did you serve? Did you grow up in a family that served?

Alternatively, not everyone grew up that way - me included. If not, what are your favorite “Army movies”, as my dad used to call them?

4. Thanksgiving/SpiceGiving

Here in the States, November 23rd is Thanksgiving (it’s always the 4th Thursday of November). I’m just here for the food and the videos of British teenagers trying Thanksgiving food. Spoiler: It’s delicious. It’s also SpiceGiving! This is the global Spiceworks Community’s version of Thanksgiving, which has been celebrated for as long as Sean has had birthdays.

Related Task: tell us what you’re thankful for this year! It’s usually tradition to go around the dinner table and do this, but we can keep it in the comments.

Alternatively, not everyone here celebrates Thanksgiving, but we all celebrate SpiceGiving, so - tell us what you’re spicy about this year! (In a polite way, ‘natch)

5. Computer Security Day

We’d be cuckoo for cornflakes if we didn’t mention Computer Security Day (Nov. 30th), as it’s almost more important than to our community than food. Hey…I said “almost.” As the title implies, it’s a day to help bring awareness to cybersecurity and its growing scope.

Related Task: tell us what steps you’re taking to increase your cybersecurity awareness and/or posture this year! Any cool/big projects to end the year?

Alternatively, if you don’t care about cybersecurity…please tell us why.

Remember to post proof of your completion of each of the quest challenges in the comments below, so that we can grant you a SpiceQuest badge when the SpiceQuest is over. All entries must be posted by November 30, 2023.

Note: As always, all entries are expected to be safe for work.

Tell us about the hottest pepper you’ve ever tried…was it on purpose? How did you feel after?

Just the pepper: Habanero… yes, on purpose… and wasn’t that big a deal… cooking wise, a Carolina Reaper to spike some chili. That didn’t go as well… I ended up eating it all.

2. Sandwich Day

Tell us what go-to sandwich is? What makes it your go-to? Is it the sandwich or the place or maybe the random little thing they serve on the side?

Favorite is the BLT… Bacon, of course! Because it’s delicious!

3. Veteran’s Day

Tell us a story! Did you serve? Did you grow up in a family that served?

Served in the USMC… Father was in the Navy, brother and sister both served in the Army.

Wifey, Babies (5) and Grandbabies (12) … Always!

Here are my responses.

  1. National Pepper Month!!

I tried the Bdubs Blazin’ challenge that included 9 peppers: Blazin’ Knockout sauce is made from a recipe including peppers such as Devil’s Breath, Carolina Reaper, Scorpion, Ghost, Habanero, Red and Green Jalapenos, Chile de Arbol and Cayenne.
2. Sandwich Day
I love sandwiches. Any type will do. My go-to? I would have to say chicken salad.

  1. Veteran’s Day
My dad served in the Army; I followed him. I served 9 years. Spent 6.5 years in Germany. I miss the beer and food. While I was overseas, my boss (historian) took a bunch of officers to Belgium and France and talked about WWII. We went to Normandy and the beaches. I’ll never forget that trip. I got an Army Achievement Medal at Point du Hoc.
  2. Thanksgiving/SpiceGiving
I am thankful for the family I have left. All my parents/grandparents are gone. It’s really just my brother and his kids.
  3. Computer Security Day

We recently had everyone reset their passwords. Does that count?
Great SpiceQuest!

1. National Pepper Month!!

Tell us about the hottest pepper you’ve ever tried…was it on purpose? How did you feel after?

Ghost Pepper/Carolina Reaper; my parents and myself grow a garden each year. we decided to try and grow some of these and i wanted to try it to see just how spicy it was. after the first bite i immediately regretted my decision. great flavor, lots and lots of heat. after about 30 minutes the burn went away… until much later. was the most uncomfortable seating i have ever had. but obviously i didnt learn from my mistakes cause every year when we start our harvest i eat one just to see how it ranks with that first one.

2. Sandwich Day

Tell us what go-to sandwich is? What makes it your go-to? Is it the sandwich or the place or maybe the random little thing they serve on the side?

Fried bologna with mustard and a little bit of sauerkraut. its my go-to because it is what my grandpa used to make and eat all the time. he was retired when i was born and i was pretty much strapped to his hip the whole time growing up. im his only grandchild that learned how to operate all the farm equipment, maintain the farm equipment, and how to do the woodworking tricks that he used to do. every time i make a fried bologna sandwich it brings back all those good memories with him. definitely a sentimental type thing.

3. Veteran’s Day

Tell us a story! Did you serve? Did you grow up in a family that served?

my Grandfather was US Army; i wanted to follow in his footsteps but the army wouldnt take me. but the marine recruiter would. signed up to join, got injured in basic and was discharged. biggest regret to date was getting injured. but if i stayed that course i probably wouldnt have met my wife, gotten the job working where im currently at(kind of a dream job for me). most likely wouldnt have been around to be able to say goodbye to my grandpa. it all works out in the end though.

4. Thanksgiving/SpiceGiving

Tell us what you’re thankful for this year!

I’m thankful for the good Lord for watching over myself and my family; thankful for my wife and her success in her field moving up to the Lead role; thankful to my job for allowing me to have a job; thankful to my in-laws for getting me on their group hunting lease this year as a birthday present for me. thankful to the doe that i was able to get two weeks ago that has kept me from having to go to the grocery store.

5. Computer Security Day

Tell us what steps you’re taking to increase your cybersecurity awareness and/or posture this year! Any cool/big projects to end the year?

We are working on re-wiring both of our campuses, while doing this we are also moving several of our network switches from inside the classrooms into dedicated technology closets and enclosed/locking server racks, we have also been sending out weekly emails about cybersecurity tips and some statistics. as well as using some phishing tests towards our users to ensure their knowledge.

-CyberSecurity Tip of the week:

Avoid Accidentally Revealing Personal Information Online

Be careful when streaming, gaming, chatting online, taking photos, or doing anything else that might compromise your privacy. It’s extremely easy to accidentally reveal your identity and location online. Whether you’re a streamer who does business from their home, a gamer with a microphone, or showing yourself online in any form, take steps to conceal your identity. This means not using your real name, not revealing your location by filming outside, or sharing any credentials.

More than 300,000 Americans fall victim to phishing/vishing/smishing each year (FBI) According to the FBI’s 2021 Internet Crime Report, the most common type of cybercrime in the US is phishing/vishing/smishing - all of which involve stealing users’ personal data.

8 Spice ups
  1. Peppers, I’ve tried them all. Why? Because I truly love the flavor of peppers. My favorite pepper, though, is Dr Pepper.

  2. Favorite sandwich would have to be the BBB sandwich, bacon, bacon, and bacon.

  3. I served, my dad served, his dad, all the way back to the beginning of wars.

  4. What am I thankful for? My family and that my health hasn’t deteriorated enough to force me into early retirement yet.

  5. What am I doing to increase my security awareness? I listen to some security and other IT podcasts, and I read up on as much as I can.

Not much into spicy things, last spicy thing i had was an Asian chicken pizza from hungry Howie’s not sure what is on it to make the spice.

Not much of sandwich person often just peanut butter sandwich for snack, sometimes ham sandwich that is probably my preferred one. Sometimes a sub at subway though I think i’d say hamburger or pulled pork is the top if that counts as sandwitch.

Friends, family horses and they helped me so much how I look at trying new things and opportunities. Things i used to be afraid to do or try or never liked are not that bad and even kind of fun.

1. National Pepper Month!!

Related Task: tell us about the hottest pepper you’ve ever tried…was it on purpose? How did you feel after?

I intentionally stay away from spicy things. I want to like spice, and actually like some spicier Indian dishes, but spicy peppers just do not like me one bit. I nibbled on the end of a jalapeno one time, and never went near the things again!

2. Sandwich Day

Related Task: tell us what go-to sandwich is? What makes it your go-to? Is it the sandwich or the place or maybe the random little thing they serve on the side?

I love a good BLT, as long as all the ingredients are fresh and crispy (no wimpy, wilted lettuce for me). Once of the dives around here used to serve a Barge BLT that had an entire pound of bacon on a triple-decker sandwich. It was a sad, sad day when they disco’d it due to the rising price of bacon.

3. Veteran’s Day

Related Task: tell us a story! Did you serve? Did you grow up in a family that served?

My Dad served (USAF), but (thankfully) missed any combat. His various transfers about the country did give him a bit of wanderlust, though, so even after he got out when I was 3 years old, we still moved and travelled all over the country, and I moved 15 times in the first 12 years of my life. I wouldn’t trade it for the world, as I’ve seen so many different areas and have never had a problem fitting in or making a friend regardless of where I go.

My brother served in the Army for a solid 23 years and did 3 tours in Iraq, as well as being deployed overseas (mostly Germany and Korea) for the rest of his career. We are so thankful he served, but are also happy he is now retired.

As for favorite Army movie, that would no question without a doubt be Stripes.

4. Thanksgiving/SpiceGiving

Related Task: tell us what you’re thankful for this year! It’s usually tradition to go around the dinner table and do this, but we can keep it in the comments.

The typical “I’m so happy for my family” response works for me. I really do live a blessed life.

5. Computer Security Day

Related Task: tell us what steps you’re taking to increase your cybersecurity awareness and/or posture this year! Any cool/big projects to end the year?

Finally getting the last of our accounts enrolled under MFA. We had some difficulty figuring out how to do a couple shared/generic accounts, but finally worked through that, so I can mark that one off the list by the end of the month.

7 Spice ups

1. National Pepper Month!!

Related Task: I had Pepper X in a Hot Ones sauce. It was pretty good, but not as hot as the capstone sauce on that show should be. In terms of legit pepper in pepper form, I’ve had a few Carolina Reapers. Those made my eyes water, and I got that spice “high” for a solid ten minutes. 10/10, would do again.

2. Sandwich Day

Related Task: I’m a fan of Chopped Cheese but trying to find a place that sells it in Wisconsin is nigh impossible. I really don’t know why I enjoy them so much. It was just a cheap “junk food” meal that my parents would get us if we were out and about.

3. Veteran’s Day

Alternatively: Saving Private Ryan or Starship Troopers. Both S-Tier in my book.

4. Thanksgiving/SpiceGiving

Related Task: I’m thankful that my waifu and I are finally taking the whole fertility thing seriously with the means to do so. We put it off for a little too long (which comes with our own grievances) but are hopeful to get rice in the cooker.

5. Computer Security Day

Related Task: We kinda went ham around lockdown, especially once ransomware started making a large presence in media. I think the last piece of the puzzle is immutable storage with automated DR testing. I’ve got a product in mind, just gotta wait ‘til next year.

5 Spice ups
  1. The hottest peppers I ever tried was actually sent to me by Spiceworks as a prize for winning the SysAdmin day comp almost a decade ago ( @nic .) It was a scorpion pepper. I made a video of it. (wow I look so young).
  1. Go-to sandwich is peanut butter. Because it’s delicious, cheap, and typically I have what I need on hand since it’s just two things, bread and peanut butter. If I am feeling like getting weird, I will go to a local spot called Diamond Deli and crab a Reuben or pastrami.

  2. I did not serve, my father did and had tours in Vietnam, and most of my cousins served in Iraq or Afghanistan. It’s something that affects each one of them differently. For some it was a positive experience, others not so much. Thanks to all the veterans out there and if you ever need help it’s available.

  3. I am thankful to be employed with an amazing company and working with such a great team. I’m also stoked about my family and where we are going in life.

  4. I am teaching webinars to clients and potential clients on web security.

2. Sandwich Day

The Frank Sinatra from Uncle Guiseppe’s. Prosciutto, Cappi Ham, Hot Capocollo, Hot Sopressata, Mozzarella, Peppers, Lettuce, Tomato, and Onion. Served on Homemade Garlic Bread.

3. Veteran’s Day

Dad was a Coastie and oldest daughter and hubby in the Air Force.

4. Thanksgiving/SpiceGiving

5. Computer Security Day

Status quo and management approved all of the renewals. MDR/IPS lets me sleep at night.

1. National Pepper Month

Do you have a favorite peppery dish/etc?

We’ve been buying this habanero cheddar cheese pretty regularly, it’s very spicy and perfect for shredding, melting, or however you prefer to consume cheese.

2. Sandwich Day

What is my go-to sandwich?

Definitely BLT. And don’t get me started on the whole ‘it’s not a BLT if you have other things on it’, because that is just pedantic. Add cheese, mustard, pickles, whatever the heck you want, as long as the ‘meat’ is bacon and you have lettuce and tomato then it is a BLT.

3. Veteran’s Day

Did you serve? Did you grow up in a family that served?

I was very very close to attending the Air Force Academy, but ultimately chose not to after spending a week as a cadet for a summer session. I respect those who did choose that route, but it was not the right fit for me. We have had some serve in both my parent’s families, but not enough to consider it common.

4. Thanksgiving/SpiceGiving

Tell us what you’re thankful for this year!

Thankful for my health, my family, and the prospect of new opportunities.

5. Computer Security Day

Tell us what steps you’re taking to increase your cybersecurity awareness and/or posture this year!

Our security/anti-phishing ‘efforts’ have become more lax and less frequent, not because of any incidents, but to appease certain high level people who complain a lot. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Personally I use password managers and don’t store or save my ‘master’ anywhere except my brain. I’d rather temporarily block what looks like spam/phishing to learn later that it was just poorly worded or misconfigured auto-replies.

6 Spice ups

National Pepper Month: Once grew some Carolina Reapers. Did not have the nerve to actually eat it so I stabbed one with a toothpick and rubbed it on my tongue. Numb tongue for 20 minutes. Was just like paralysis, with heat.

Sandwich Day: One of the best quotes from a dying man: “You put more value on every minute…You know I always kinda thought I did that. I really always enjoyed myself. But it’s more valuable now. You’re reminded to enjoy every sandwich and every minute.” Warren Zevon on his last appearance on David Letterman.

Veterans Day: My Maternal GrandFather was an army surgeon during WW1 and was in Africa at the end of the Boer War. My dad trained but never saw active duty. My paternal grandfather trained with the US Marines as a sniper but never saw active duty.

ThanksGiving/Spicegiving: I am grateful to live in a relatively stable country.

Computer Security Day: Nothing is truly secure in my opinion. Take all precautions but do not be surprised.

1. National Pepper Month
Actually, the hottest thing I’ve ever tried was some random hot sauce a buddy of mine grabbed from Mexico when we were in high school. We were at his house boxing and decided the boxing would be more fun if our mouths were on fire. So we all took a spoonful of this sauce and then ran outside with the intention of swinging fists. We maybe got 6 feet out the door and we were all dying. It was unbearable. So we all ran back inside and started with water, which made it worse. We ransacked the fridge and started shoving random crap in our mouths to try and get some relief. I had milk, a head of lettuce, and some apple sauce… which all came back up about 10 minutes later. We were hurting for a solid hour and never tried that sauce ever again.

2. Sandwich Day
I keeps it simple - just a plain old turkey sandwich. Bread, turkey, lettuce, mayo. No tomato or anything else.

3. Veteran’s Day
I served and it was a blasty blast. Almost lost my right leg but ultimately I got away with all my limbs, fingers, and toes. I have terrible knees, chronic back issues, and bad hearing/tinnitus but hey… you can’t win them all.

4. Thanksgiving/SpiceGiving
I’m thankful for heated and cooled seats in vehicles. We dropped the ball by not giving the inventor of these fine products a Nobel Peace Prize.

5. Computer Security Day
Just like with Independence Day being celebrated with explosions, I’m going to celebrate Computer Security Day by disabling my firewalls and giving all users Administrative privileges on the network. When I got into IT, security was a major part of it but nowadays I feel like it’s 90% of the job. Had I known that, I would’ve become a brain surgeon instead, as that’d be a much simpler job.

  1. National Pepper Month:

    1. No hot peppers for me, the best I do is Pad Thai spiced 3/10.
  2. Sandwich Day:

    1. My go-to is generic ham and yellow American cheese. The best is Gruyere and ham where the cheese is slightly melted.
  3. Veterans Day. I

    1. still think it should be Veterans’ Day, but anyway.
    2. In the late 2000s or Oughts for our members across the Pond. the city of Brentwood, TN sponsored the members of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), 1st Brigade Combat Team, Bastogne, unfortunately I do not remember which regiment (1-2) of the Battalion, 327th Infantry Division in Clarksville, TN, 45 mins north https://home.army.mil/campbell/units/101st/1stbct This group traces its history to the Battle of the Bulge: The Battle of the Bulge | ASOMF . My Father was one of the primary hosts and we became friends with a lot of them. When my Father’s mother died, a couple of them came to the service. Then we went to the memorial gardens. It was there we saw the rest of the squad. They flanked the 'AstroTurf carpet 'in BDUs (Battle Dress Uniform). Aside from the death of his mother, I never saw my Father cry so much at the sight of the soldiers. I cry every time I think of it, including now.
    3. Thank you @panda-marie , the only one I know in SW. Though I know there are others.
    4. I agree with @ode2joy about Stripes. I also like, MASH (the movie and book), A Bridge too Far, Full Metal Jacket, and Hamburger Hill.
  4. Thanksgiving/SpiceGiving:

    1. I am Thankful for my family & friends, which includes my Spiceworks family!
  5. Computer Security Day:

    1. @sean-spiceworks birthdays are the most important days of the year. I work in M&A (mergers and acquisitions). Part of my job is to ensure the new eneities have the proper security controls in place and issues remediated before they start they start the incorporation process.

1. National Pepper Month!!

I ate a whole Habanero pepper in college once. On purpose. It burned going in and it burned going out (the next day). For the next few years (decade?) I could recall the flavor of the pepper from memory. For the first few years, the memory alone was enough to make me nauseous. I call it my one stupid thing I did in college (everyone gets one… right?).

2. Sandwich Day

My usual go-to sandwich these days is baloney and cheese (swiss, usually). Back before lunch meat cost the same as a small car, I would have a hard salami sandwich whenever possible.

My most “unique” sandwich was a baloney, pickle, and catchup sandwich I made as a kid.

3. Veteran’s Day

Never Served in the military, but many family members have. All of them survived their service, including members who Served in WWII or Vietnam. I am thankful for each of them.

4. Thanksgiving/SpiceGiving

I’m thankful for a specific friend/co-worker who invited me to help chaperone, what will be, an amazing week-long field trip with a group of amazing students to someplace I had hoped to one-day visit, and do some very bucket-list-like things while there.

5. Computer Security Day

1. National Pepper Month – Alternate. Earlier this summer I had an abundance of sweet banana peppers in my garden, and I was unsure of what to do with them all. There were nearly 50 of them. My family does a lot of canning, and I found a recipe for canned pickled sweet banana peppers. They turned out great and plan on eating them this winter.

2. Sandwich Day – My go to sandwich is a Corned Beef Rueben. It is piled high with corned beef, sauerkraut, thousand island dressing, and melted Swiss cheese on rye bread. Mmm…

3. Veteran’s Day – I had two grandpa’s that served. One was in the Army and the other was in the Marine’s. Thankfully neither of them had to serve in any wars, but it did come close. I didn’t learn until my remaining grandpa passed away last year that he was a sniper in the Marines. My family stated he would never talk about it.

4. Thanksgiving/SpiceGiving – I am so thankful for good health, my family, and for Jesus.

5. Computer Security Day – We have been really pushing security training this year using KnowB4. A lot of our users really enjoy it and have learned several things to help keep them safe.
