Welcome to another SpiceQuest!

In this series, we call out current holidays and give you the chance to earn the monthly SpiceQuest badge!

(Each task can be done at any time. They don’t have to be completed on a certain holiday.)

This month we are celebrating the following holidays:

1. Author Day

Author Day is November 1st. It’s a day to celebrate writing, and our favorite authors.

Related Task: Write the next sentence of the story after someone who posted before you, or illustrate by posting a picture. The first line is “Bob was sad as he sat at the bus stop.”

Alternatively, tell us your own cool story concept, or a cool story concept from an author that you enjoy.

2. Origami Day

Origami Day, on November 11th, is a day to celebrate the art of paper folding. Origami originated in Japan, where the origami crane traditionally symbolizes hope and happiness, and origami in general is often associated with nature. Participating in origami crafts can also lower blood pressure and reduce tension. Bonus: Tell us in the poll which origami animal you like best.

Related Task: try making an origami animal and tell us / show us how it went. HERE is a tutorial on making an origami Trex if you want to try that.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to try your hand at origami, the 11th is also Veteran’s Day and Remembrance Day. Tell us something you want to remember, and why.

3. Pepper Month

The entire month of November is Pepper Month, which of course we are always celebrating here at Spiceworks. The theme I am going with this year is “Emotional Support Pepper” after finding (THIS)

Related Task: tell us why you need an emotional support pepper in your life.

Alternatively, if you don’t need any emotional support (or if food helps), tell us a cool spicy recipe that you want to share.

4. Thanksgiving

In the US, the last Thursday of November is Thanksgiving (the 28th this year), but even for those outside the US, the idea of being thankful is a good one. It reminds us of all the cool things / relationships / knowledge that we have in life already, and that we should take time to appreciate what we have in our lives rather than being stressed out and constantly craving more.

Related Task: tell us some things that you are thankful for.

Alternatively, if you don’t feel thankful today, or just want to try something else, the 28th is also Red Planet Day.
Tell us what business you would start on Mars if you were forced to emigrate along with 25% of the population of earth, but given the resources to start over.

5. Computer Security Day

November 30th is Computer Security Day. The IT community is, of course, always vigilant, but maybe it is a good day to send users some security tips, or change our passwords, just in case.

Related Task: tell us a good tip that the general public needs to know about computer security.

Alternatively, tell us a story about how you learned to be more security conscious.

Remember to post proof of your completion of each of the quest challenges in the comments below, so that we can grant you a SpiceQuest badge when the SpiceQuest is over. All entries must be posted by November 30, 2024.

Note: As always, all entries are expected to be safe for work.

It was the face of his former boss that fired him last week…

Seems the last couple of months something has gone sideways for me. didn’t get bosses job went for, was in Amazon Vine demo program then booted with no warning, hear rumors in groups on unwritten rules of canceling orders. etc, i’m just like how unprofessional can you be, tempted to just delete my entire Amazon account now. Then other day out horse riding i got kicked for the first time, hit my shin knocked my foot out of the stirrup, scraped, sore.

Health, friends, family, going to ride a horse in a parade first time this year.

sounds too good to be true it probably is.

Got a call a few weeks ago knew my name, job title claimed to be from Intel was regarding A Vpro demo,i don’t recall if he already had email or i gave. but got email about event but the domain seemed strange as was not from Intel and digging into whois info did not add up. I deleted the future emails and a demo session, he called earlier in week I just hung up then got email kind of like i tried to call but you hung up… the wording just didn’t seem real professional so was like whatever pretty sure this is fake anyhow.

Story thus far:
Bob was sad as he sat at the bus stop.
But his day was about to change.
As a bus pulled up to the stop, he saw a vaguely familiar face in one of the windows.
It was the face of his former boss that fired him last week…

Bob knew that his boss’s hand had been forced by upper management and jumped onto the bus to talk with him.

**1. Author Day:
Stephen King. Purchased a few first editions. If I want to really be scared I watch the news.

2. Origami Day
One of my favorite daily calendars was origami. Still remember being 8 years old and seeing the crane paper chains at the Hiroshima memorial. Heart wrenching.

3. Pepper Month
I need help as I’m becoming more jaded towards the requests that are more entitlement than support.

4. Thanksgiving
Thankful for most days I don’t inadvertantly piss anyone off walking in the door. See pepper emotional support above.

5. Computer Security Day
Please reboot, it’s on login that scheduled updates get pushed. Update your home s%&t too.

Ha ha… here’s another one, just in case.

Alternatively, tell us your own cool story concept, or a cool story concept from an author that you enjoy.

I am a fan of Kurt Vonnegut’s crazy stories, Cormac McCarthy, Stephen King.

The most recent one I have read that really struck me is Running the Light by Sam Tallent. Stand-up comedian that I enjoy. His writing style is so good, story about an old road comic on a downward spiral. The story is cool to me as a stand-up fan, but his style and the way he paints a picture in the mind is incredible to me.

2. Origami Day
Related Task: try making an origami animal and tell us / show us how it went. HERE is a tutorial on making an origami Trex if you want to try that.

I used to make all sort of origami. Maybe I will have to try my hand at some again.

3. Pepper Month

Alternatively, if you don’t need any emotional support (or if food helps), tell us a cool spicy recipe that you want to share.

Made this recently for some friends and it was a big hit!

4. Thanksgiving

Related Task: tell us some things that you are thankful for.

Wife, continued employment, family.

5. Computer Security Day

Related Task: tell us a good tip that the general public needs to know about computer security.

Always confirm who is on the other end of the phone/screen when in doubt.

Bob knew that his boss’s hand had been forced by upper management and jumped onto the bus to talk with him.

That’s when he saw Sandra Bullock was driving, and realized he made a big mistake.

Alternatively, I always liked the story concept from the Simpson’s episode that does a twist on It’s A Wonderful Life, where he gets to see what everyone’s life would be like if he hadn’t married Marge. Everybody’s life is far better, including Marge’s and his own life, but he still wants to go back to he way it was because he loves Marge.

2. Origami Day

Alternatively, tell us something you want to remember, and why: I have trouble remembering what I did yesterday. And even though this obviously has nothing to do with remembering our veterans or fallen soldiers, the thing that drives me batty and makes me really want to remember is when I find one of those wall-wart transformer power supplies and I can’t remember what it goes to.

3. Pepper Month

I need an emotional support pepper because they won’t let me take my emotional support honey badger anywhere. And at least with the pepper I can slap people with it.

4. Thanksgiving

Well, at first Martian tourism would be big, and I could take people on tours to see the various Mars rovers we sent there. It might be cool to go see Opportuinty, Curiosity, etc. But if we’re emigrating there, I think I could make a fortune selling Dust Busters.

5. Computer Security Day

Tell us a good tip that the general public needs to know about computer security: The biggest security risk is YOU!

Sure, enough, Keanu Reeves jumped on at the next stop.

2. Origami Day
Veteran’s Day and Remembrance Day.

I remember my grandfather (now in heaven) and the bravery of him and his men in 1944 in northern France and Belgium.

3. Pepper Month

Oooh, time to make stuffed bell peppers

4. Thanksgiving

I’m thankful that I get to see God’s creation everyday. Bonus, God also made Mars.

5. Computer Security Day

Backing up your computer to the cloud is great, but you still need a local backup of your computer - what happens if your Internet isn’t working and you need to restore a file?

2. Origami Day
I enjoy doing Origami, but it’s been a while. My family & I did some a few years ago for Halloween:

3. Pepper Month

Related Task: tell us why you need an emotional support pepper in your life.
I am a man who loves stuffies: a pepper would be a “hot” addition to my collection!

4. Thanksgiving
Related Task: tell us some things that you are thankful for.

I’m thankful to have a walking commute through a park and over a river. I enjoy witnessing the change of seasons: even when it means I end up soaked to the bone upon my arrival at the office.

5. Computer Security Day

Related Task: tell us a good tip that the general public needs to know about computer security.

Use a password tool to create unique passwords: make sure it works on your phone and your computer.

Sandra laughed as she kept her eyes on the road, giving Bob a quick glance in the rearview mirror. “You better hold on,” she said, smirking. Keanu, who had just taken a seat next to Bob, leaned over with a wink. “Welcome aboard, buddy,” he said. “This bus doesn’t stop.”

Bob’s former boss looked equally bewildered, clutching his briefcase tightly. “Is this part of some movie promo?” he whispered to Bob. But before Bob could answer, the bus lurched forward, picking up speed.

2. Origami Day
Related Task : try making an origami animal and tell us / show us how it went.

I didn’t do so hot at an origami animal, but I did make a cool little tray for my desk:

3. Pepper Month
Alternatively, tell us a cool spicy recipe that you want to share.

Super Easy Spicy Jerk Chicken

1 lime juiced
1 tablespoon garlic crushed
1 red chilli finely diced
1 teaspoon thyme
½ teaspoon allspice
½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon soft dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon oil
2lbs chicken legs and thighs

Mix up all the marinade ingredients. Coat the chicken with the marinade and leave in the fridge until ready to cook, anytime between and 2 and 24 hours.

Put the chicken on a greased baking tray and bake in the oven for 40 minutes at 200

4. Thanksgiving
Alternatively, tell us what business you would start on Mars if you were forced to emigrate along with 25% of the population of earth, but given the resources to start over.

Martian Habitat and Infrastructure Development:

  • Martian Habitat Construction: Modular, expandable habitats designed to withstand dust storms, radiation, and extreme temperatures.
  • Renewable Energy Solutions: Solar and geothermal energy systems to power the colony with renewable resources.
  • Hydroponic Farming: Indoor farming systems using hydroponics or aeroponics to provide fresh, nutritious food for Martian settlers.
  • Water Extraction and Filtration: Developing technologies for extracting and purifying water from Martian ice deposits or soil moisture.

5. Computer Security Day
Related Task: tell us a good tip that the general public needs to know about computer security.

One essential tip for computer security is to enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all your important accounts, especially those that hold sensitive data like email, banking, and social media accounts.
