Alright, I’m going to need some help. I’ve read all the posts out there about this issue and I still can’t seem to get it working.

I’m having an issue with the Spiceworks Desktop software starting up automatically after the computer is rebooted. I’ve tried setting it to start as a service and that still doesn’t fix it. Every time the computer is rebooted, I have to kill all Spiceworks tasks in Task Manager and then relaunch Spiceworks Desktop, then Spiceworks is good until the next reboot. I just uninstalled and reinstalled Spiceworks again this morning and that didn’t help.

The computer doesn’t reboot often, but when it does I have to do all of this to get Spiceworks working again and it’s getting a little frustrating. Can someone please help me fix this permanently?

Hi,

When the PC comes up after the reboot, what happens when you try to access Spiceworks? Do you get an error page?

Do you have a policy that stops unknown or untrusted services from starting?

Is the account used to start it at least a local administrator?

Jaime D,

When I reboot the computer and it comes back up, there are two processes running in Task Manager, spiceworks.exe and spicetray.exe. Even though the spicetray.exe process is running, the Spiceworks icon does not appear in the taskbar, even hidden. It’s just not there.

If I launch the Spiceworks Desktop icon from the Spiceworks server, nothing happens. If I try to access Spiceworks via a webbrowser, I get a Page Can’t Be Displayed error.

For everything to work, I have to kill all Spice*.exe tasks in Task Manager, and then relaunch the Spiceworks Desktop icon, then everything will work.

@jaimedelapaz

Rod-IT,

I do not have any policies running on this computer that would prevent an untrusted service from starting. And I’ve tried a Local Admin and Domain Admin account and neither would get spiceworks running automatically from a reboot.

@rod-it

Look in event viewer, is there any clues in there as to why?

What is the OS?

OS is Windows 7 Professional 32bit.

And I have not looked in the even viewer. What specifically should i be looking for?

Failures, reasons for it not starting - red warnings are good places to investigate

Checked the Event Viewer logs, there are no errors regarding Spiceworks.

In Spiceworks directory is a log directory, can you attach fatal.log if it exists

1 Spice up

There isn’t a fatal.log in the \ProgramFiles\Spiceworks\log folder.

production.log is there anything in the end of that about failures?

1 Spice up

These are the only “fail” instances in the production.log

I[10:18:31.72 4c7790] ping failed: execution expired

C:/Program Files/Spiceworks/pkg/gems/actionpack-2.3.18.spiceworks.0/lib/action_controller/failsafe.rb:26:in `call’

Here is a copy of the startup.log

startup.log (26.7 KB)

If you are having to kill Spiceworks in task manager, how are you validating it isn’t working ,as that suggests to me it is starting.

Are you trying to re-run the desktop icon, are you failing to connect remotely, how are you validating this?

There are a couple of errors in that log but as far as I can tell it is starting on port 80.

Because once the spiceworks server has rebooted and logged in, I can’t access my Spiceworks Inventory or Helpdesk at all. If I try to open SpiceworksDesktop icon on the desktop on the server itself, it will not open. Even though the spicetray.exe process says it’s running in the Task Manager, I can’t see the spicetray icon in the Taskbar. If I try to open Spiceworks remotely from another computer that accesses the Spiceworks database, I get a page can’t be displayed error in all browsers.

At this point for me to get Spiceworks functioning properly, I have to kill all spice related tasks running “spicetray.exe , spiceworks.exe , spiceworks-finder.exe , spiceworks-httpd,exe” and then launch the SpiceworksDesktop icon on my desktop. Once I launch it from the desktop, the spicetray icon appears in the taskbar, and I have to right click on it and select “Restart”. Once I do this, I can access spiceworks and it will remain working until the computer shuts down or restarts.

I agree with you that since there are spiceworks tasks in Task Manager running, the program appears to be running. I just don’t know why i have to do all these other things to be able to use Spiceworks.

Go to settings and set it to delayed start, I wonder if other services are starting before the apache is ready.

Set the spiceworks service to Automatic (Delayed Start). When the computer was rebooted, the service started and shows it’s running, but I can’t login to Spiceworks.

Ok, I think I’ve finally got it working. I’m using the local administrator account to start the service which I’ve deleted and recreated. And the service is set to automatic delayed start. It takes about 5 minutes before I can access Spiceworks (older computer) after a reboot but I can. Thank you very much for your help!
