Hey SpiceHeads,
You must be wondering why things have been a little quiet in regards to the Spiceworks Help Desk Server (HDS). That is because we have been working hard to roll out some exciting features for SpiceWorld.
HDS 1.1.0 is here!
With your feedback in mind, HDS now works with VMWare ESXi/vSphere “out of the box” - no more complex conversion/reformatting of the OVA to support ESX.
Alternatively, HDS can be installed on your own Linux (Ubuntu) server or virtual machine using a single automated shell script.
What’s inside?
We’ve implemented a variety of features along with the new tech-stack that makes our newest IT help desk and ticketing application simple, easy-to-use, and faster. We’re working hard to provide an increasingly powerful application to replace our legacy help desk.
So what’s new?
-
With “Import & Export Tickets” functionality on the “Settings” tab, admins can easily migrate tickets, in any format - .csv/.xls/.json, from and to the HDS.
-
Admins can now mute the tickets using “Ticket Muting” functionality during WIP and avoid sending multiple email communications to their users.
-
“Bulk Ticket Deletion” enables admins to delete the bulk (spam) tickets that might unintentionally have been created by email loops or email spam bots.
-
Admins also have the ability to delete multiple organizations under the “Settings“ tab.
-
User portal authentication now has 3 available options, including Active Directory , guest/anonymous mode, and email authentication (which has been set as the default mode).
-
HDS now supports sending and receiving email using your on-prem or hosted Exchange Server 2019.
In addition, our team has also fixed minor bug fixes related to email, SSL certificate setup, suppressed end-user emails and more.
As the legacy Desktop version is getting older and older, we encourage users to move from the legacy Desktop version to the latest version of the Help Desk Server or the Cloud Help Desk which are built on our latest tech-stack.

I REALLY need to pay a LOT more attention here! I had no idea this was even in the works! Have always used the ‘built-in’ Help Desk.
Even though I don’t really have much use for it because of the company I work for (they have their own ticketing system), I’m still going to deploy this guy on the home network since I do run Spiceworks on it for auditing, monitoring and alerting. And besides… because I CAN.

Will this run as a VM on Hyper V?

Hey @Brad4535, It will run as VM on ESXi and Ubuntu for now …
HyperV is already in our pipeline and we are working on it.
Meanwhile, enjoy this

I most certainly WILL! I’m looking forward to giving this a test drive!
Side note: Although my account doesn’t reflect it, I’ve been using Spiceworks since the early 1.x versions. Unfortunately I needed to have my original account merged into this one (no big deal though) so I lost my original “using since” data. Just say’n…

So this is the “newer” cloud-based code but for local server deployment. Awesome!
Curious if there is a tentative projection on when custom plugins will be available for use in this version (similar to the previous spiceworks desktop) or if there are alternative plans for similar functionality and what that road-map looks like?
Thanks!

I just successfully deployed this in Hyper-V and was running it and able to login to the initial GUI.
Only “bug” i noticed was that it wouldn’t allow me to click the “already have an account? Sign in!” link… I would click it and it would reload right back to that same “create a spiceworks account to get started” splash screen.
May just be a general bug, a specific one to me, or due to me using hyper-v.
I created the initial VM and installed Ubuntu Server 18.04 from ISO. Then I ran the installation script provided by spiceworks for ubuntu install.

One of the things I like about the current legacy desktop version we are using is the apps available people have written. We use several of them, like assigning techs their own color. Also, there are no canned reports. Is there a way to export existing reports and import them into the server version?

Glad that it worked out for you! We are working on so many things right now and would certainly add this to our backlog. Keep following the https://community.spiceworks.com/spiceworks-support/help-desk-server-hds for the latest updates.

Dennis Harrison - Thank you for the great feedback. We’ll surely look into customization and canned reports.
For now, we do have Imports/exports functionality. You could go ahead and import the data(tickets, attachments & users) into the server version and generate reports in the HDS itself

We are really looking forward to migrating our Windows based Helpdesk server over to the new HDS format.
Has the issue with using an email account for incoming/outgoing emails on Exchange Online (365) with Security Baselines and Modern Authentication been fixed? We have tried so very many ways to get this to work, but still haven’t been able to get incoming email to our helpdesk account to connect properly…
This feature is what’s keeping us from decommissioning our old on-premise exchange 2010 servers, and fully migrating to Exchange Online.
Thanks!

Is there anyway of updating an existing instance of HDS with the update? I have a VM I configured with the beta version right before this and I’d prefer not to completely wipe it away.
I’m curious to know for future deployments how that works as well.

“generating the reports” at this time basically means re-creating all the custom reports we’ve created from scratch. It would be nice not to have to do that.
And when I tried importing the json file exported from our current HelpDesk, it fails. I haven’t had time to research.

Also, could you elaborate more on what issue you are facing while importing json file? What helpdesk are you using ?
Happy to help!
