We have been using Spiceworks for the helpdesk for years. I have not kept up. I understand it is not being supported any more. Is this true? We are on Spiceworks version 7.5. It does look like there is a slightly newer 7.5 version out there. The OS of the server we are running Spiceworks on (in house) is older so we would like to upgrade it (or go to the cloud).

Can anyone shed some light on the future of Spiceworks and the Helpdesk functionality?

Oh - If Spiceworks Helpdesk in the cloud is the future (which I noticed when I was looking at the topics (groups) to put this question to), what security is in place? We place lots of confidential information in our tickets.

Thank you.

{"@type":"Person
[{"@type":"Answer

You may want to look into Spiceworks Help Desk Server. Its an on-prem help desk that you install through an Ubuntu VM.

If you have an old workstation lying around, you can set it up on that. That’s what I did.

https://community.spiceworks.com/support/help-desk-server/docs/setup

This new version is MUCH faster than Legacy 7.5.

The only major issue I had was setting up Email services. The new HDS requires SMTP AUTH, so I had to create a relay from HDS>Postfix>SMTP Server

Besides that, it has been great. Its quick, doesn’t have too many unnecessary extras, and its a VM, so backups are easy.

Highly recommend you look into it.

{"@type":"Person
techy0131
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/techy0131"}},{"@type":"Answer
Hi,

Thank you for the response. I have a few questions. I’m assuming the Spiceworks HDS is supported and as far as we know will continue to be supported, correct?

In the link you provided (thank you), it shows both VMWare and Hyper-V, I’m assuming I would just have to do the one we are using. (When writing this question I noticed the light underlining of ‘Fire up your virtual appliance and import HDS’ and ‘Login to the virtual machine and run HDS’. There are no lines under VMWare ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V so I’m thinking it has to be one or the other, which would end my confusion and make sense.)

Do you know if it is possible to populate HDS with the tickets we already have in Spiceworks 7.5? We have quite a bit of knowledge in there I would like to save if possible.

Thanks you again - it does sound promising.

{"@type":"Person
randy0603
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/randy0603"}},{"@type":"Answer
You can import tickets. Its very easy to export from the legacy server and import into HDS.

To export

Settings>Help Desk>Advanced Settings>Import/Export Tickets

To import in HDS

Settings>Organization Name>Import/Export Tickets

You can install the VM to ANY Host. You can also use the Ubuntu Desktop Operating System (That’s what I am using)

Just install the Ubuntu OS and configure with their commands.

{"@type":"Person
techy0131
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/techy0131"}},{"@type":"Answer
