My spiceworks instance has been severely degraded after upgrading to version 7 more then 6 months ago.

Sometime after the upgrade 90% of my devices in the inventory became stale and no longer reported updated information.

I have bulk deleted all my devices more than several times and attempted to rescan devices in. However, spiceworks is suddenly unable to scan any information other than the devices ip address. Otherwise it’s unknown and useless.

This is something that worked without question and is now utterly broken. I worked with support for several weeks (months ago) and they told be they found a bug and it would be fixed next patch. Several patches later and my inventory is still broken.

I have manually tested everything I can think of: WMI, credentials, firewall, arpcache, dns and whatever other shenanigans the last support guy had me do.

Has anyone else encountered this and found a solution?

If you upgraded from a version earlier than 7.6 then this is not a supported setup, and DB corruption could be possible.

At this stage you have two options, if you can reinstall and start again, remove and do a clean install.

If you have data you want to keep, contact support@spiceworks.com to see if there is any DB corruptions and they will take a look for you

Hey Sean,

Sorry to hear about the Inventory troubles dude. I just checked on that previous ticket you had with us and looked up the bug that we told you about. We have got that fixed and it is slated to go out in our next release, 7.5, which is days away at this point.

We’d love to have you as a Beta tester, since you’re seeing an issue that this next version should fix. Head to this link to get some more information on this if you’d like to participate:

My time tables may be a little off with the 6 months because I have been applying every major update since 6.2. So I don’t think I would have made any leaps in version number.

That said I think you’re right about my database being corrupted. The support person I worked with said the db was not corrupt but I never believed him.

Despite having deleted all my devices; the Software table inside the db (accessed via firefox developer tools) still contained some 10000+ orphaned records which referred to devices that no longer existed in the devices table. that may not be a corruption exactly but it definitely doesn’t seem right.

Ok cool glad to hear it.

I was thinking about trying 7.5 and now it looks like I will.

I’ll report back after I install and run the first scan.

Scanning is now fully non-functional.

I upgraded to 7.5 and after completion I did a reboot for good measure.

Now the network scan module doesn’t even discover any active devices. However,I can manually access other devices from the spiceworks server no problem.

Why would you do it this way and not within the inventory view?

I did both.

How exactly does this question help me figure out my problem?

It doesn’t, I never claimed it would - I was more curious in if there was an underlying issue that caused you to do it via the DB directly, which may have inadvertently caused more damages.

This is why I asked if you could do a clean install, even on another box co-existing with this one, to see if that has the same issues, rule out the DB altogether.

Hey Sean,

That’s very valuable feedback to us at this stage in the release. Could you please make a post on our 7.5 Beta forum so we can get our devs to take a look?

Here’s a direct link to make a new post on that forum:
