Hi Guys,

I’ve just done a google workspace to google workspace migration and seem to be having more issues than expected. I was going to use the built in migration tool but turns out it required getting each users passwords and only migrates mail, contacts and calendar, the full discussion is here but I ended up using Systools Migrator thanks to @jclambert1

I’ve found a few issues since the migration and hoping I can get some pointers. Currently the old and new are running side by side. Besides dealing with SSO, here are my top 3 concerns.

  1. This one is unexpected: files that were shared from the old workspace and added to my drive by people it was shared to were also migrated showing 0b file size, when they click on it it says to request permission since they’re on their new account (different domain), however this is still to request permission to the copy on the old workspace. Reached out to Systools support and it turns out the sharing permission is not migrated. Files that were google docs and sheets format are also now word and excel so it’s really doing a more of a download and upload vs migrate as you would think migration would copy the properties of the items being migrated.

So essentially, everyone has to locate the files they had shared in the past and re-share them

I’m looking into GAM to see if it’s possible to download list of files per user and who they are shared with, then write the sharing permissions back to the files on the new account. Not sure if that’s doable but seems like my only option at the moment. If someone has come up with a script for this already, a link would be appreciated

  2. Tasks was not migrated, there are a few users that use it a lot so would be great if there’s a way to migrate google tasks to a new google account. I was able to export it to json using takeout but no way to import.

  3. Users can’t join a meeting they created, this one makes sense since it’s actually creating a copy of the calendar items in the new workspace. I think my only option would be to see if GAM can look through all the calendars, for every event with the old domain, add the new domain to it so they can join the meeting.

5 Spice ups

Documents that are individually shared are a problem. Documents in a Share Drive are super easy to match & reconfigure. We had spent a couple of months coaxing people to use the Shared Drives. First it is a much better workflow and it also reduces the chances of lost data due to offboarding users.
Tasks… We dont use them. We use Keep.
