I have a Windows 7 x64 PC running Spiceworks which I’m trying to scan two Windows 7 x64 laptops with. All are members of the same homegroup and the same workgroup.

Spiceworks fails to scan both laptops even with the firewall turned off with ‘check account, password or WMI configuration’.

I have found several similar-ish posts but some have domain members and others have different results from the wmic command.

Mine fails from the Spiceworks server to both machines using: wmic /user:username /password:yourpassword /node:remotemachine systemenclosure get serialnumber

with the error ‘access is denied’.

Any ideas? This seems to be a common problem through all the versions of Spiceworks I have used and on some machines I have never managed to get it working.

I had to change two settings in Win7 Windows Firewall Advanced Settings. Under Inbound Rules, find Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI-IN) and set allow for Domain and Private, Public. This fixed the two machines I was having a time with.

Did you try WMI Diagnosis Utility ? VB-script generates verbose log with recommendations.

the account with spiceworks scan the laptops are setting to access WMI ?

@Rormeister - I have turned the firwall off completely - no change.

@Vasily - I’ll give that a try, thanks.

Piers, out of curiosity, what are the settings for WMI-In on those devices. I’m not 100% convinced that having the firewall turned “off” indeed ignores every setting.

The reg change in this post fixed it for me - nothing else worked.
