Let me tell you being a technophobe has made it so much more difficult to get there, but alas, I made it. Phew!
As Aaron pointed out here , in my Q&A, IT was never where I planned to be, I had always wanted to work with robots, I wanted to make, invent and create autonomous AI robots (think Boston Dynamics). Failing this I wanted to do computer electronics, I love knowing how things work and how they gel, what makes them work, and why – I guess this is why working with computers, servers, SANs etc. has a similar appeal.
I still like to dabble in electronics and often take things to pieces to understand them, or sometimes I reverse it and put things back together or even do repairs for friends, occasionally I get a project in mind and plan to make something (regardless of how simple it maybe), but more often than not work and home life can take me away from this, hopefully over the coming winter months I can do a little more.
For anyone interested I have no formal IT qualifications, not a single one, although I would love VCP and MCSE, these are not something I am actively pursuing, however if the time ever comes where I have the money or work want to pay for it, maybe, who knows. Until that day, I will remain active with both Microsoft and VMware technologies, among others.
Over the last 2-3 years I have been actively contributing, and not just lurking, I do also observe others comments, other questions and others posts (I do skip posting on some, although I do read a lot), I also pick up tips, things I didn’t know and find clarification on some things I have posted, and this is one reason Spiceworks is such a great place to be. We are all like-minded IT people.
During the 15 years at my current employer, I have learnt so much, and considering when I started here I was a trainee, I am now one of the most respected IT guys there, which makes me feel so proud, even more so because I have no formal qualification and started with very limited IT knowledge.
I do hope my time here has helped at least one person, and in the future more, it’s a good feeling knowing that I can give back to the community, I am more than happy to help and while not always fully understanding the questions, I am also a keen learner, if I am wrong, I’ll gladly accept this and make note for future, none of us are experts in everything.
I have tagged a few I said I would when I posted this, please forgive me if I missed you off.
It is also posts like this that make me keep wanting to come back here, knowing there are people out there who value others makes it all worthwhile. There are quite a few of you here that are also my inspiration.
Thank you for letting me part of this community.
A little fun fact
Rod-IT – you all think you know where this name comes from, and you are partially right, Rod is my name, and IT is my game (sigh), but this is only part of the reason I chose this alias here.
At work there is one guy who has always come to me for second opinions or clarification and for a few years now he tells people that if they need an answer to something, he doesn’t Google it, he Rod’s it, so Rod-IT was born, in a double entendre way. While I don’t claim to know everything and never will, he at least believes I am a good source for him.
