Hey SpiceHeads,

This Thanksgiving, it’s the reveal you all have been WAITING FOR, and it isn’t spicy turkey! You will now be able to download and run the https://community.spiceworks.com/r/4350 Help Desk Server (the latest version1.2) on Microsoft Hyper-V hosts.

We’ve tested Hyper-V on HDS using 2 options :-

  • Setup Hyper-V Server 2019 and administer it easily with Windows Admin Center web UI

  • Install the Hyper-V role on Windows 10

Either of these options may be free for you if you’re a Microsoft shop. With either option, you simply download the VHD file and run Help Desk Server on Hyper-V.

To enable Hyper-V on your existing Windows 10 device, ensure that you’re running the 64-bit version (this is very likely, considering Microsoft deprecated the 32-bit version in May 2020). You’ll get the best performance with 8-16 GB RAM to make sure your virtual machine will run smoothly.

Here’s a quick guide to install the Hyper-V version of Help Desk Server on your machine -

In addition to support for Hyper-V, we have also released the following in Help Desk Server 1.2 :

  • Users can now set a custom hostname during initial setup.

  • The login page is redesigned and admin login issues are fixed.

  • URL redirect incorrectly handles nested subdomains - fixed with the addition of an ENV variable.

Enjoy and let us know what you think of it after taking it for a spin!

Hope to see you in the Spiceworks Help Desk Server soon!

Mmm, I know what my dessert is about to be, following my earlier dessert

Woot Woot!!

Great, I spun one up this morning in a matter of minutes. We have several hyper-v servers, so this is nice. When they start asking for a help desk service for other departments I can easily recommend this.

Hmmm… I cannot find a .vhd file for Hyper-V only the .ova?

Oh this is really really nice! I run Hyper-V as well and I will take a look at this…Thanks!

Is there an straightforward export/import routine to migrate my settings and tickets over from our existing helpdesk ?

2 Spice ups

Same question as Timothy5110 as we have spiceworks 7.5.00107 on premises on a Windows 2012 server currently.

Is there an easy way to migrate into this since it appears to be linux-based ?

We are contemplating a migration of our staff Hyper-V environment from an on-premises to the Azure cloud, does anyone have the Hyper-V Spiceworks server running in a MS Azure cloud network?

Any chance that the Inventory system will follow suit? If HelpDesk isn’t Windows OS Dependent anymore, hoping that Inventory isn’t far behind.

Its asking for a username and password? What is the default one for the hyper-v vhd? I mean once I booted up the one for hyper-v

So this is NOT the inventory part? I don’t even use the help desk part.

I got it working. The portal page is not working for me. I am getting a cant reach this page error when I click the link in the settings. Ok some reason the config when you first setup the vm doesn’t actually give the server a server name even though its supposed to . Also I get a server error when anybody else but the first admin setup tries to log in.

edit2 : This wont work for me. I am getting too many errors to even bother. I am not going to spend the time to go through the virtual machine to figure out why certain pages aren’t loading when I followed spiceworks directions to set it up. It seems like somethings get changed to the new name and some don’t. Ends up with a broken install.
