i had a user this morning complaining that their computer was very slow and that when they type a sentence there is a delay and then all the letters rapidly appear.
the user said to me “can you check to make sure my keyboard is plugged in all the way? i think it must be loose somewhere or have a clog in the wire, only allowing the letters to trickle into the computer.”
thunk! thunk! thunk! i had a hard time not laughing out loud at the user, but instead politely responded that i would see if i could help.

It does fascinate me sometimes…people just don’t think.

I had a ticket about three very important POS systems being down at one of my buildings. Naturally, I called in a bit of a panic about this. Turns out that the computers are, and I quote “running the same but kind of different, you know?” …
The best part is that it isn’t the worst thing I’ve had happen so far this morning. That would be someone disconnecting a piece of finicky old hardware that is a pain to reconfigure, and about 30 minutes before it would be needed again.

Maybe the keyboard cord just has a kink in it? Or maybe the keyboard isn’t fully awake yet. Tell them to pour some coffee in it to see if that will help make it more alert.

Not sure I had anything like that recently but that is one I’d find hard to laugh at if I got called about it.

I would suggest flushing the power supply:

what was the real problem. rectified it.
Funny, but I am curious what the real problem was too? Did you fix it up?
Give the user a special phone number (use your imagination) and tell them to call the local cable rooter.

My money is on a clogged wire.

One of the funniest things I heard a user say to me was “I understand”

Tell them the flux capacitor in their keyboard is a little outdated so it can’t process their swift and expert typing. You mystify them AND flatter them, it’s a twofer (<—holy crap that’s an actual word) .

best as i could tell (i have not physically gone to the machine yet), the antivirus was running in super duper overdrive (eating 80-99% of processor) because of a joy filled USB flash drive the user brought in from home (against policy yet with supervisor approval).
i give it another 24 hours before i end up DBANing the drive and re-imaging it.
grrrrrrrrrrrr

Sometimes you just have to let them deal with their own consequences… kind of like a hang over lol… self-inflicted? Zero sympathy.

A few lads in our office went wireless, but they have some pretty sketchy MS keyboards and mice sets. Every now and then the signals cross over and one will start controlling the other. It is quite amusing when it happens.

I guess at least they didn’t try to use the license dongle for a phone system that has been missing from another office for months? Yeah, it turned up this week because it wouldn’t work as a flash drive in a new laptop. Remember these users have kids and try to sleep tonight!
