hi all , I am expanding my office network and need to purchase some new switches. I am currently using only dell switches but I am not impressed with the pricing on their latest offerings. We have about 60 users in the office and I am already using the ubiquity unifi Pro APs. I am considering using the ubiquity EdgeSwitch since it has POE built in and is better priced.(but only a 1 year warranty).

Does any one have any experience with these switches? I am primarily concerned about:

reliability

802.3 poe compatibility for cisco phones and the Ubiquiti 48v APs

reliability

port trunking/LAG setup

Depends if your phones require PoE or PoE+ as POE is a standard, or rather 802.3 is, you should be fine.

I do want to caution against mixing vendors for different networking gear. If you start with one vendor, I prefer to keep consistency in my network. Instead of having to learn how to configure 3 different brands, and keep up with that, I rather deal with one brand at a time.

I used a handful of the edgeswitch in a recent project, they are very solid so far. Standards exist for a reason POE = 802.3af and POE+ = 802.3at. If the switches support the standard and your endpoint do as well, you shouldn’t have a problem.

It’s hard to argue against Dell switches. Rock solid workhorses, they are, but… our experience with there POE switches has been spotty. That’s not much of a trend, so take that my account with a grain of salt. Still, unless you need a lot of POE ports, a standalone multi-port POE injector might be a better bet.

I put an edgeswitch 48 Full PoE in a K-12 with several phones and a few AP’s hanging off of it - no drama with it so far

I got an engineer from Ubqnti calling me next week. But hell from what we talked about so far, I don’t see any reason yoiu would have a problem. I’m a non profit and have mixed dell (1 and decomissioned) switch, 4 HP switches and things work fine.

Thanks all for the replies. I went ahead and ordered a couple so we shall see how it works out. Everything I am attaching is 802.3af, but I have been burned by ‘Standards’ before (i’m looking at you 802.11N!)

I just wanted to update now that i have had these switches for a few months. Summary - They worked out great. Everything I needed and then some. The price was fantastic, and although the configuration was a bit of a learning curve, once I did, it is reasonably intuitive to find and edit the configuration. I had zero issues rolling these out and feel confident in the reliability if they are like the APs I already have.

If Ubiquiti is listening - a very nice product thanks. As a suggestion it would be pretty sweet if could manage the switches from a single interface rather than logging into each one individually. Even better if I could also manage the APs from the same interface.
